UT ex Williams to join Incarnate Word coaching staff
When Incarnate Word made the jump to NCAA Division I this month, cheap motorcycle fairings, it knew it had to start doing things on a larger scale. The school no longer could view itself as a private, liberal arts university located near downtown San Antonio but as one looking to earn a place in the big-time world of collegiate athletics.UIW took a big step in doing as much Thursday, motorcycle fairing, announcing that former Texas and NFL standout running back Ricky Williams will join the football coaching staff.Williams, motorcycle fairings, 36, hasn't officially been hired - he still has to go through the human resources department's hiring procedures - but the likelihood of his not getting the job is remote, a school official said.Efforts to reach Williams were unsuccessful."We knew that the move to Division I would increase the talent pool of candidates for staffing positions as they came available," UIW athletic director Mark Papich said in a news release. "When Coach (Larry) Kennan approached me regarding Ricky as a potential addition to our staff, it reinforced what we already believed to be true. The potential to bring someone with the athletic experience of Ricky Williams to work with our student-athletes will enhance their exposure to elite level football."A Longhorn legendWilliams won the 1998 Heisman Trophy while playing at Texas under Mack Brown."What many may not realize about Ricky, but that I'll attest to, is how intelligent of a football player he was," Brown said. "He is a student of the game who has great passion and understanding for what goes into a successful team and program. Ricky is a guy that knows and understands every nuance of the playbook and someone I think will make a terrific coach. He's just a brilliant guy with a bright football mind."Up, down NFL careerWilliams, aftermarket motorcycle fairings, the No. 5 pick in the 1999 NFL draft, played for New Orleans, Miami and Baltimore during an 11-year career marked by on-field success and off-field troubles. He was suspended for 18 months in 2006 by the NFL after multiple violations of the league's drug policy. Williams, who retired from the NFL after the 2011 season, rushed for 10,009 yards and 66 touchdowns.UIW coach Larry Kennan said he had been talking with Williams about joining the Cardinals, who went 2-9 in their final year in Division II in 2012."Ricky reached out to me about getting into coaching," Kennan said. "We have an opening, and he is looking to get into coaching, so I think it is a good fit. His experience will be a big help to our staff and players, and I think he will have a positive effect on our recruiting efforts." |
