Hacker Posts on Zuckerberg's Facebook Wall Hoping to create a virtual toy box mixing the worlds of its popular movie characters, Disney Interactive is getting extremely ambitious with its Disney Infinity video game, which launches on Aug. 18. Featuring a number of Pixar and Disney characters in a mashed-up video game world, it’s clear that the House of Mouse has seen the monstrous sales that Activision has enjoyed with its Skylanders mix of figures and gaming and is trying to emulate that success. Similarly, Disney Infinity features a connectible peripheral that allows players to place a toy version of their character, which is then playable in the game. The game features characters and playable sets from The Incredibles, Monsters University, longchamp sale, Pirates of the Caribbean, Cars, Toy Story in Space (a Buzz Lightyear-themed adventure) and The Lone Ranger (which was likely motivated by the marketing department long before the film tanked). “We really have focused on having a multitude of different types of gaming experiences, longchamp sale, longchamp le pliage,” says Bill Roper, longchamp le pliage, Disney Interactive’s vice-president, who was in Toronto for a launch event earlier this week.“We have six different play sets and each one of those is very dedicated to the characters and the worlds of that franchise. So The Incredibles play set is all about super heroic combat, with a really deep combat system, whereas the Cars area is all about racing and doing stunts.” There will also be a central hub area called the Toy Box, where players can create their own Disneyfied spaces and potentially even their own games, which looks to take some of the world-building ideas from another breakaway game success, Minecraft.“We give you everything from little blocks all the way up to massive set pieces, like here’s the Matterhorn, with the beginnings of a grind system, so you can build your coolest, craziest roller coaster ever,” says Roper. This is one of the biggest launches from Disney Interactive in terms of ambition and is being touted by the company as one of its most important initiatives. It was first announced in 2010 and reportedly cost more than $100 million to develop. The company’s interactive version has had a mixed history, having a disappointment with the poorly received Epic Mickey games but mobile hits with Where’s My Water and its many spinoffs. It is easy to see the goal here; if Disney Infinity is a success, it could serve as a gaming beachhead with a malleable world, where the company could provide many more classic franchises and characters as downloadable content or in sequels. One of the initial roadblocks to the game’s development was reportedly John Lasseter, chief creative officer at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation, having an aversion to mixing up the separate universes. The workaround was that the in-game representations are not the characters but the toy versions. “Just like every kid does with toys at home, they pick them up and have the Transformers fighting against the G.I. Joes,” says Roper. “That’s exactly the sort of mixing and matching we know people are going to love in this game.”In previews, the game looks impressive, seeming very fun and accessible, with plenty to do across the different play sets. But parents should be wary about the potential costs.Like Skylanders, the game comes with three starter characters — Mr. Incredible, Jack Sparrow and Sully from Monsters University — with an ability to buy additional characters in sets or separately, to unlock areas in the game. As well, there are power discs that can be placed underneath characters to provide additional game items, like Mickey Mouse’s car. Beyond the console versions of the game, Disney has just released two apps. One is the Disney Infinity: Toy Box, allowing people to build new worlds and place them in the game, and Disney Infinity: Action! App, which lets people create movies with the characters. |
