Tweet Pin It submit to reddit Email article Print Reprints & permissions Click for more photos Holden Cruze hatch Holden has introduced a hatchback version of its Cruze small car. Holden has effectively doubled its small car arsenal by introducing a hatchback version of its Australian-made Cruze that will be available with the same three engine and trim choices as the existing sedan. Given that the five-door is priced exactly the same as the four-door - from $21,240 for the 1.8-litre CD manual - it could be reasonably expected that Holden is hoping to build on the Cruze's sales success which vies for small car supremacy with the Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla. Holden executives however will not be drawn on whether the strengthened Cruze range will take it to the top of the small car tree, let alone pip its Commodore large car - the cornerstone of the local manufacturing plant - as Australia's best-selling car. "We will sell as many as we can sell profitably," said marketing director John Elsworth at the launch of the Cruze hatch. Advertisement "We're not going to talk forecasts,Michael Kors Purses, because forecasts can go wrong." Holden expects the hatch to account for around 55 per cent of Cruze sales, although some of these would go to customers who might previously have bought the four door. Holden has increased the output of its South Australian plant from 430 to 480 vehicles a day, including Commodore-based models for domestic sales and export, with the Cruze accounting for 185 vehicles a day. Potential buyers can expect a hatchback that is about 100mm shorter than the sedan, with a sharply angled rear window line and a wide-opening tailgate, but not one with much in the way of discernibly different driving characteristics. The three engine choices (1.8-litre petrol, 2.0-litre diesel and 1.4-litre turbo petrol) are the same, michael kors canada, as are the choice of manual or optional six-speed automatic transmissions. Suspension and steering bushes have been retuned to compensate for the extra weight of the hatchback's rear window which gives the Cruze a higher centre of gravity, but only to bring it back to par with the sedan's handling ability. On the road, it is obvious that work done to minimise noise levels from the rear tyres echoing through the hatch's open cargo area have paid off. Without glancing in the rear-view mirror, it is difficult for front seat passengers to detect any difference to the sedan. Ride comfort on the 17-inch wheel and tyre combination fitted to CDX and SRi variants is a little sharp, so confusingly perhaps, if you're after a luxury ride opt for the cheaper CD model fitted with higher profile 16-inch tyres. Holden's Australian design team may have aimed for a hatchback with a sporty look, but the basic underpinnings don't deliver an overtly performance-oriented driving experience thanks to slightly vague steering and a ride/handling compromise that's only above average, not way beyond. The 1.4-litre turbo engine with 103kW of power is as sweet as in the sedan, although needs to be revved for best performance and works better with the manual transmission than the auto. The 120kW diesel's extra power and torque give plenty of added grunt (although for a $3000 price premium) and noticeably better acceleration from low revs. Holden did not have versions fitted with the 104kW 1.8-litre four cylinder available at the hatchback's launch, perhaps indicating the lack of excitement available from the elderly four cylinder. The new luggage bay might look a little awkward from the outside - the short rear overhang has been grafted onto the existing Cruze design with its prominent front-headlight treatment - but it does offer a new level of practicality. A boot volume of 413 litres compares with the sedan's 445-litre capacity, although it can be enlarged to 1254 litres with the rear seats folded. The hatch's cargo area doesn't have a particularly low floor with the optional spare tyre fitted underneath, but it does have no less than four "curry hook" tie-down points for shopping bags. |
