AUTOS: Inaugural Barrett-Jackson Cup Winner Crowned
The inaugural Barrett- clutch and brake levers Jackson Reno Tahoe Hot August Nights auction concluded with the awarding of the first Barrett-Jackson Cup, a competition that honored the best customs and hot rods of the week. The big winner was George Poteet of Memphis, Tenn., who brought his Troy Trepanier-built 1969 Ford Torino Talladega, built to emulate a NASCAR stock car, but streetable. The Boss-429 powered Torino is headed to the Bonneville Salt Flats for high-speed testing.Trepanier, proprietor of Rad Rides, has his brother, Jack, on hand to receive the award.“This is one of the greatest honors Rad Rides has ever had,” said Jack Trepanier. The Rad Rides website describes the Torino thusly:“Doing a car that no one else has done is a banner philosophy at Rad Rides,” the company’s website said. “A '69 Tallad Motorcycle Racing Partega became the perfect blank canvas for creating a car distinct from the typical street machine. I didn't want to just copy an old NASCAR car. I liked the thought of building a car that recalled the NASCAR glory days of the 60's and early 70's, but then enhance it with modern day features and body modifica sport bike parts tions. George was already thinking along the same lines, so we set out to transform a plain-Jane '69 Torino GT into our interpretation of what Holman Moody might have created cheap motorcycle accessories today.” The five finalists, who were chosen from about 400 entries, brought their cheap motorcycle jackets rides to the Reno-Sparks Convention Center following the completion of the Barrett-Jackson auction on Saturday night. There, adjustable clutch lever, they were recognized for their amazing automobiles, all of whi adjustable handle ch, coincidentally, were Fords. The finalists were:• George Poteet, motorcycle performance parts Memphis, Tenn., 1969 Ford Torino Talladega — winner, $20,000 plus a 430-horsepower LS3 crate engine from Chevrolet Performance.• Ron Cizek, Omaha, Neb.,motorcycle brake lever, 1940 Ford Coupe — 1st runner-up, $10,000.• Tom Gloy, Incline Village, Nev., 1932 Ford Roadster — 2nd runner-up, $6,000.• Bruce Ricks, Sapulpa, Okla., 1956 Ford Sunliner convertible — 3rd runner-up, $3,000.• Phil Becker, Dwight, Ill., 1932 Ford 3-window coupe — 4th runner-up, $1,000.The nationally known panel of judges — Bobby Alloway, Pete Chapouris and Bob Millard – were selected by veteran custom car builder and multiple-award winner Bob Johnson of Gainesville Orient Express Racing , Ga.
