{ Q&A: Finn Flare's Ryasova Dressing People for Success }
Igor Tabakov / MT Ryasova says a falling male population gives women’s fashion incentive. Theanswer as towhy Russians are so good atgetting rich quickly came toKsenia Ryasova, who started andruns thechain ofFinn Flare clothing stores, as she peered out thewindow ofa train departing fromHelsinki. Her Finnish partner Raimo Aaltonen, former owner ofthe Finn Flare trademark, who had posed thequestion,Michael Kors Outlet, was standing onthe platform wiping thesweat fromhis face andwaving goodbye. He genuinely wanted tounderstand his customers' culture better. Ksenia Ryasova Education Incomplete higher education in municipal economics and management from the State University of Management Work Experience Early 1990s – Private entrepreneur 1997-2002 – President of Lyudi v Novom clothing stores 2006-Present – President of Finn Flare in Russia Favorite book: “Gone With the Wind” (1936) by Margaret M. Mitchell Movie pick: “Forrest Gump” (1994) directed by Robert Lee Zemeckis Favorite Moscow restaurant: Ponton, Berezhkovskaya Naberezhnaya, in front of building 8 Weekend getaway destination: Diana hunting lodge in the Tver region Ryasova andher Russian colleagues had been shopping when Aaltonen started calling her cell phone. He panicked that they might be late forthe train, though their departure was still two hours away. He had already arrived atthe station. TheRussians made it tothe station with just enough time before departure forAaltonen torun tothe luggage room toget their suitcases andreturn tothe train. He barely managed toget thepile ofbags intotheir train car before it started moving. As Ryasova watched her partner walk toward theexit, she realized she had theanswer tohis question andcalled his number. "Raimo, remember you asked why we earn money faster than you, foreigners?" Ryasova asked. "It's because we don't waste time. You saw we arrived atthe station exactly before departure. It means every minute works forus. You foreigners do everything leisurely. This is thedifference between us," she said. Ryasova,Michael Kors Handbags Outlet, 42, was born intoa family ofSoviet engineers. She spent three years inVietnam with her husband inthe early 1990s, andused her time there toexplore thelocal manufacturing market. After returning toRussia, she started buying clothes abroad forsale, then grew todesign her own clothes andorder their production atleading factories inVietnam. In1996, she met Aaltonen inGermany, who atthe time owned Finn Flare, which had been sold inthe Soviet Union since 1974. Ayear later Ryasova, bythat time owner ofa chain ofmultibrand clothing shops called Lyudi v Novom,Michael Kors Outlet, or "People Dressed inNew," started designing clothes tosupplement Finn Flare's main collection that was being sold inRussia. In2002, Ryasova decided todedicate all her time toexclusively branded Finn Flare shops andin 2006 became thehead ofFinn Flare inRussia. This year she made it intothe top 100 most influential women inRussia, arating compiled byEkho Moskvy radio. Theexperience gave her unique insight intowhat people like towear andwhy. Her global travels gave her perspective onwhy some nations are poorly dressed andothers not, andhow competition forthe attention ofthe dwindling male population is anessential element tofemale fashion inRussia. This interview has been edited forlength andclarity. Q: What are your observations andadvice about doing business inRussia? A: Themain thing is not tobe afraid. Currently, our authorities are so worried that there will not be enough [foreign] investment that now thetime is ripe tocome toRussia. Today, you will see agreen light where it was red before. It is more likely that officials will have policies that are too soft andwill bow down before foreign investors. Ingeneral, profitability is higher inRussia than inEurope. Indeveloping countries, profitability is always higher —money is earned onrisks. Besides, our unions rarely go onstrike. Theunemployment level inMoscow is very low. Therefore people don't make afuss when they get fired. This is abig plus. InSpain,michael kors canada, forinstance,Michael Kors Handbags Outlet, when someone gets fired, chances are low that they will find ajob. InMoscow they will find ajob tomorrow. This is both aplus anda minus. Theminus is that it is not easy tofind acandidate forthe job andyou have toinvest intraining your personnel. There are more advantages toliving here because therent andfood are cheaper than inEurope, andit is not difficult tosave money. Q: What are some business challenges specific toRussia? A: Logistics is atypical Russian problem. Inwinter, you can have problems with deliveries bycar because theroads may be heavily covered with snow. You have toforesee this andopt foralternative transport, like airplanes. Another problem is thedeficiency ofRussian tax laws. Forexample, losses are taxed. It's acommon sight tosee acustomer eating achocolate bar ina grocery store that he then does not pay for. There is alot ofstealing going onin stores here, including clothes being stolen fromour shops. Businesspeople are never presumed innocent andmust pay taxes onsomething that has been stolen, or broken, or eaten. InFinland, forinstance, there is no such thing. AKORT,Michael Kors Handbags,michael kors canada, anassociation ofretailers, ofwhich I am amember, has repeatedly put this issue before thegovernment. Q: How do you deal with corruption/bribery? A: We encountered corruption earlier. It was around thetime when [former Yevroset owner] Yevgeny Chichvarkin had this incident with his cell phones. (Editor's note: InAugust 2005, alarge shipment ofYevroset's cell phones was held up atcustoms. Officials accused thefirm ofsmuggling, while thecompany claimed that themove was part ofan effort toillegally take over thecompany). It is amazing! These were really hard times inRussia, but there was alot offoreign investment. Why is it that now everybody starts shouting about corruption? I haven't encountered it atall inrecent years. Theauthorities are fighting corruption, andnow people inepaulets will not hold up your goods atcustoms andextort bribes forreleasing thegoods. Q: Who are your role models? A: Maya Plisetskaya, Leni Riefenstahl, Beate Uhse. I like women who had adifficult life but didn't let things fall apart. Q: What inspires you now? A: I am inspired bypeople inthe streets. That's why I like visiting Europe — Italy, France — anddon't like visiting America atall, because it hurts me tosee abeautiful woman inshapeless shorts andflip-flops. InMilan, Italy, everyone dresses very stylishly, although their salaries are lower than inAmerica. InRussia, some women wear sable fur coats andhigh heels inthe metro — it doesn't look very good. There is alot ofkitsch inRussian dressing habits now,Michael Kors Handbags, but there are alot ofwell-dressed people, too. We are trying toproduce fashionable andtrendy clothes. Thus, if I understand that acertain type ofclothing will sell well, but I will be ashamed tosee people inthe street wearing it, we will not produce it, even if it could have earned money. What is thedifference between Russian andEuropean women? Inour clothes, there always must be adose ofsexuality because thenumber ofmales is low anda woman must always look beautiful. I believe that foreigners who arrive here notice this. Andwhen you design clothes forthe Russian market, you must take intoaccount that if clothes are comfortable but not sexy they will not sell.
