Indians should try to understand the value of freedom in our lives and do the needful to preserve and promote it furtherIndia is on the path to progress. Celebrating Independence Day is not just looking back at the struggles that we have experienced but also looking forward to the future. Sanjay Verma, Consul General of India, shares his thoughts in an interview with Khaleej Times.Excerpts:Message to the Indian community…It is the duty of every citizen to contemplate on the contributions of all the men and women who worked so hard to give us the invaluable gift of freedom. We should also try to understand the value of this freedom in our lives and do the needful to preserve and promote it further. All of us should renew the pledge in the preamble to our constitution to build a free and fair society and a united and progressive nation. With its myriad concerns that are pulling our nation in many ways, our journey as a nation still continues with each challenge opening up newer possibilities. Our track record of facing the brunt of national and international crises till now has been remarkable given the odds.We have come a long way since 1947 where our social and economic indicators have improved greatly. This is clearly reflected in the increasing respect and interest that India commands these days. All this has been made possible by the contributions of the common man. The dissonance one encounters in media back home should be seen as the want of a restless population for even faster growth and development. In the case of the UAE,michael kors canada, the hard work of Indian expatriates who have been fuelling the growth of both the UAE and Indian economies is remarkable. They are also the true torchbearers of India-UAE relations where people-to-people contacts have translated over millennia into abiding cultural and economic bonds. Bilateral trade, investment and tourism figures with each other are among the highest for both countries. Hats off to the enterprise and determination of all those unnamed heroes and heroines of our modern nation!Social campaigns run by the consulate…The Indian Consulate reaches out to the Indian expatriate community through its various wings, each servicing the needs of the 1.6 million strong community in different ways. The contact details of its various officers are available on our website. Anyone can call up or e-mail their problems or even seek an appointment during working hours with the relevant officer. We also take queries on our Facebook page. The Indian Workers’ Resource Centre (IWRC),Michael Kors Purses, a unique Government of India undertaking in the UAE provides counselling and advice to all Indians here. This may range from financial, legal to psychological counselling where housemaids, workers and professionals are free to call up the 24-hour hotline(80046342) for advice or even approach its specialists for a detailed counselling session. The centre has received 650 calls this year till July. The consulate also runs a weekly radio show called India Matters on Mirchi 88.8 FM Dubai every Saturday from noon to 2pm. Each show focuses on issues of relevance to the Indian community ranging from consular services to medicine, education, culture and so on. Listeners may also post queries that are answered on the show by the visiting specialist or consulate officials. We also associate ourselves regularly with various Indian organisations including our community-led business councils, professional bodies and associations promoting cultural and health-related services to run medical camps or to reach out to children with special needs to create awareness. The consulate also associates itself with various cultural initiatives by associations to promote awareness on the art forms and festivals of India.Secret to a successful career and life…There are no shortcuts to success. Hard work and scrupulous attention to detail are the basic ingredients of success for any person in any field in life. The career of a diplomat is very difficult to assess as the changes or initiatives that we work at are effective only with the contributions of a dedicated team over a long period of time. What is most difficult is perhaps achieving that delicate balance and detachment between one’s personal and professional life. One must not affect the other. Success for me at the end of the day lies where I have been able to make a difference in the way the interests and positive image of India is promoted in the eyes of both Indians and the global community.Vision for the consulate…I have always tried to convey that the consulate belongs to the Indian community, which is free to approach us at any time. We are open to suggestions and criticisms. My aim has been to make th consulate and all its officials, including myself, accessible to the people.I also believe in highlighting the changing nature of our bilateral relationship, extending the centrality of our trade and economic ties, the role of our entrepreneurs,Michael Kors Outlet, our high-skilled and trained professionals, etc.Advice to the younger generation…I think it is the younger generation that I should look to for advice than the other way round. The Indian youth of today are so much more dynamic and exposed to so many more ideas than we were in our growing years. They are a very lucky generation where India’s growing prosperity and prestige are for them to take advantage of and promote further. However, a major challenge that they face is taking forward the task of social engineering and reforms in India to sculpt a country better poised to achieve the aims of democracy. Democracy is not the mere conduct of regular elections,Michael Kors Purses, but what happens between those elections. Society and its youth are entrusted with the task of ensuring the strengthening of civil life and a polity based on freedom, equality, brotherhood and justice.— suchitra@ khaleejtimes.com var google_adnum = 2; function google_ad_request_done(google_ads) {var s = '';var i;if (google_ads.length == 0) { return; }s+=' _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
