{There are secret powers in male sweat}
They help ants leave trails to a food source and allow wolves to mark their territory. Now, these mysterious chemicals may actually play a role in how men work together.Pheromones are the secret agents of the body. They waft out of the sweaty places like your armpits,Michael Kors Outlet, silently influencing other people and animals through that incredibly sensitive organ, the nose. They can pass messages about sexual attractiveness, menstrual cycles, and now,michael kors canada, it turns out, how good a deal we’re willing to give another guy.In a new study from the University of Turku in Finland, 40 men were asked to play a game that involved splitting a small amount of money. Before playing, half were exposed to a sample of androstadienone,Michael Kors Outlet, a component of armpit sweat that’s usually considered a pheromone. The others sniffed an inert control.On average,Michael Kors Handbags Outlet, the pheromone-sniffers were more generous,Michael Kors Handbags, offering to give up a larger share of the 10 euro prize, or, if the roles were reversed,michael kors canada, accepting a smaller offer. So,Michael Kors Handbags Outlet, in a sense,Michael Kors Handbags, they were more co-operative and accommodating to their fellow man.The researchers, led by Paavo Huoviala, also found an interesting link to the male hormone testosterone. “Salivary testosterone levels were found to positively correlate with co-operative behaviour,” he reported. “Males with high salivary testosterone levels made larger offers, but also accepted smaller offers than males with lower testosterone levels.”The most stingy offers came from men who were in the lower 50 per cent of testosterone levels, and also in the control group, so they were not exposed to the pheromone. Making a bit of a leap from salivary testosterone to status, the authors write that “low status individuals do not treat each other fairly, while high status individuals are fair to both low and high status individuals.” They opine that this may be because low-status individuals value resources (in this case, those few euros) more highly because things of value “are harder to come by for them.”What does it all mean? When confronted with results like this, researchers usually look for an “evolutionary advantage” type of answer. One suggestion, which we could label “chicks dig it,” is that females consider male-to-male generosity to be attractive. Also, guys who are not driven by desperation may see the benefit in future reciprocity from the males they treat well in the game. More research is clearly required, probably in a singles bar.What about eliminating the middleman and just letting a woman get a whiff of your armpits? Some studies have shown that women are even more sensitive to androstadienone than men. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, wrote that “merely smelling androstadienone maintained significantly higher levels of the hormone cortisol in women.”Of course, cortisol is a stress hormone, and having a rank body odour might work against you in a social situation. Also, you’d need to work up a lot of sweat. Researchers in that Finnish experiment used high concentrations of the pheromone. _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
