OTTAWA — As part of its expansion plans,[url=http://woolrich-outlet-online.blogspot.com]woolrich arctic parka[/url], the Rideau Centre is preparing for a glassy makeover of its Rideau Street facade, including an angled overhead canopy at its northwest entrance and lightening the look of its twin pedestrian overpasses.The canopy is first, with details revealed in an application to the city’s committee on heritage buildings. That committee has to approve the renovation because the eight-storey office tower at 10 Rideau St., the “Transportation Building” now occupied by OpenText and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, is historic, nearly a century old. Its doors, at Rideau and Colonel By Drive, are to give access not only to the mall but to the city’s new light-rail system when it opens in five years, and the canopy is intended to make the entrance there look a little like other LRT stations so people will be able to recognize it even from a distance.It’s to be “a new uplit projecting structural glass canopy with fritted glass set within a thin frame of bent porcelain panels,” says the application to install it, with renderings showing it projecting a bit over the sidewalk. The plans include a glass wall at ground level, new doors to the mall and general repairs to the Transportation Building’s faces, including new lights to show the place off better at night.(The Lowertown Community Association isn’t thrilled with the canopy, on the grounds that it interferes too much with the Gothic look of the building. The architect on the project, Louise McGugan of Barry Padolsky Associates,[url=http://woolrich-outlet-online.blogspot.com]Woolrich Outlet[/url], argues that the “panelization of the canopy glazing reflects the rhythm of existing columns and reinforces the vertical Gothic lines of the existing heritage facades.”)Work on the pedestrian walkways comes later: it’s still in early planning, but the application from the Rideau Centre’s corporate owner Cadillac Fairview mentions it to give context to the plans for the Transportation Building. The overpasses are often criticized for being heavy black tubes that loom over the road and sidewalks below. Cadillac Fairview’s documents state that the overpasses are staying, but they’ll be getting a thorough facelift so they look a lot lighter.“The existing bridge superstructures, glazing, and roofs are to be removed down to the existing walkway substructures,” the plan says, to be replaced with clear-glass curtain walls and lighter metal sheathing underneath. They’ll also be angled so rain runs down into drains built into the walkways, not onto the ground below.The heritage committee is to debate the canopy plans next Thursday morning.
