{World figure skating championships: Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir face uphill battle}
LONDON, ONT.—All season long the story of ice dancing has been the Canadians versus the Americans. Can Olympic gold medallists and reigning world champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir keep their title in the face of the American rivals they haven’t beaten all season?Round one,Michael Kors Purses, the short program, went easily to the Americans. Meryl Davis and Charlie White skated their Giselle program exquisitely, earning them a personal-best score of 77.12 at the figure skating world championships Thursday.Virtue and Moir had the crowd on the edge of their seats throughout their routine The Waltz Goes On. But their synchronization was off in their twizzles and their side-by-side footwork wasn’t flawless either, leaving them more than three points back with a score of 73.87.They have come from behind to win with the free dance before, but never quite this far back.“That’s a pretty large gap,” said Moir, adding “nothing is impossible.”“I don’t think it changes our job on Saturday,” Virtue said. “We’re just going to attack the (free dance) program. We’ve got nothing to lose and we’re confident in Carmen so we’re looking forward to skating it.”The duo were surprised their scores were so low but Moir tried to brush off their disappointment, saying the joy performing for a hometown crowd mattered more to him than judges’ opinions.“This is probably my favourite competition of my career because I could care less what the 11 people think. I care more about the 10,000 sitting behind them,” he said.When Virtue and Moir took to the ice at the Budweiser Gardens the roar of the crowd was deafening for the beloved London locals, though Moir is technically from Ilderton, a few minutes north.Being second to Davis and White — the 2011 world champions who would dearly like to regain their title here this week — is an all too familiar spot for Virtue and Moir this season.The Canadians were runners-up to Davis and White at the Grand Prix final in Russia in December and again at Four Continents in Japan last month.Japan was a particularly difficult result for the duo as they seemed on track to deliver a sensational result. They were skating their sultry Carmen program to perfection when Virtue’s leg cramped. They stopped, as the rules allow, for three minutes but in the end came second,Michael Kors Outlet, again, to the Americans.Their free dance program Carmen has been challenging and they have made some changes and tweaks based on judges’ comments throughout the season. But they have never waivered in their faith that it’s the routine to win them worlds on Saturday here.“The sign of a really good program is that it might not get rewarded right away,” Moir has said.After their practice sessions this week, Moir said they were full of confidence about their long program.“I think Carmen has come a long ways,” he said.Fellow Canadians Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje finished 6th with a season-best score of 67.54.Weaver, who hadn’t even expected to be able to compete because of a broken ankle, pumped her fist in the air in triumph the moment they finished cleanly.“First we dreamt we’d make it here and we did. Then we dream we’d have the skate of our lives and we did,” said Weaver, 23, who makes her home in Toronto.Poje, 26, is a Waterloo, Ont., nativeWhen Weaver’s injury happened they had just overhauled their free program, which they will skate Saturday night, to try and get higher scores They finished fourth at worlds a year ago but recalibrated their goal to be on the podium here after Weaver broke her fibula mid-way through the season.Canada’s third ice dance team of Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, who train in Scarborough, sit in 15th going into Saturday’s free dance. _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
