A good effort by GWS but the Giants just couldn't keep it up in the last term. Melbourne by 41 points. The Demons sing the song after beating the Giants by 41 points. Mark Neeld is called into the circle, but smiles and declines. Gatorade is flying, players are grinning...and that's it. Celebrations over, now into the rooms for the team meeting. Upvotes:1 Downvotes:0 Copy Link Colin Sylvia. Photo: Getty Images 4:01pm: FULL TIME - Melbourne 22.12 (144) GWS 15.13 (103)What a last quarter by the Demons! Nathan Jones was brilliant in the last term, and for the whole day, ending up with 28 disposals. In the last term Gawn, Evans and Howe popped up once or twice each, and Grimes and Trengove were good as well. For the Giants, Shiel was excellent, as was O'hAilpin, and Treloar had 30 touches. But the Giants ran out of legs and the Dees, desperate for a win, were able to run all over the top of them in the last quarter. Not great news for the Dees though with Micth Clark injuring his foot late. But while he was off the ground, their forward line didn't seem to suffer.Demons players out on the ground enjoying the atmosphere for a fair while after the siren, and now they are walking down the race to cheers and backslaps from the crowd. A week is a long time in footy! Upvotes:1 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:54pm: FULL TIME - Melbourne 22.12 (144) GWS 15.13 (103)THERE IT IS! Melbourne gets its first win of the season with a record last quarter. Relief for the Dees! Upvotes:2 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:52pm: Q4 - Melbourne 22.12 (144) GWS 15.13 (103)Goal Dees! Jeremy Howe's goal from directly in front, about 20 metres out, has broken a record. This quarter is now the best ever in Melbourne's history. A 12-goal quarter!! Upvotes:1 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:49pm: Q4 - Melbourne 21.12 (138) GWS 15.13 (103)Goal Dees! Can you believe it! A Jeremy Howe banana brings Melbourne's tally of goals in the last term to ELEVEN. They are absolutely running a way with it, the Dees. Upvotes:1 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:47pm: Q4 - Melbourne 20.12 (132) GWS 15.13 (103)And another! Max Gawn takes the free in the goal square and absolutely cannot miss from there. With just over 4 minutes left, that is surely the sealer. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:46pm: Q4 - Melbourne 19.12 (126) GWS 15.13 (103)Goal Dees! Bad luck for the Giants - 50 metre penatly paid against them for a tackle on Evans - who looked as though he had played on. But you can't tackle until the umpire calls it, so the Dees were awarded the penalty and Evans converted. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:45pm: Q4 - Melbourne 18.12 (120) GWS 15.13 (103)O'hAilpin with a valiant attempt on goal while caught in a brilliant tackle. Just a behind though. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:44pm: Q4 - Melbourne 18.12 (120) GWS 15.12 (102)Very tired looking Giants outfit tries to get the ball forward but they break down on 50 Melbourne rebounds, Davey takes the mark 40 metres out on a slight angle, and converts. Surely, now, the Dees have this one. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:41pm: Q4 - Melbourne 17.12 (114) GWS 15.12 (102)Shocking 50 metre penalty by the Dees. O'hAilpin takes the advantage and then sends the ball across the field and inside 50 to Sumner. Sumner's kick from 45 is a ripper. GWS not done with yet! Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:39pm: Q4 - Melbourne 17.12 (114) GWS 14.12 (96)Goal Davey! Goal Dees! There it is! Davey swoops on the loose ball in the goal square after the Dees just bombed it in long. He just got his boot to it off the ground. That could be the sealer... Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:37pm: Q4 - Melbourne 16.12 (108) GWS 14.12 (96)Injury trouble for the Giants, with both Bugg and Whitfield off the ground getting checked out. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:32pm: Q4 - Melbourne 15.12 (102) GWS 14.11 (95)Melbourne goes forward through Sylvia, who bangs it in to Howe who takes a sliding mark right where the 50 metre line intersects with the boundary line. And his kick is a BEAUTY. Dees fans find their voices! Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:31pm: Q4 - Melbourne 14.12 (96) GWS 14.11 (95)Trengove! Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:29pm: Q4 - Melbourne 13.12 (90) GWS 14.11 (95)Evans again for the Dees! He has marked it 40 metres out, pressed right up against the boundary line. His kick is a beauty! Could this lift the Dees? Margin is just 12 points. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:21pm: Q4 - Melbourne 10.11 (71) GWS 13.11 (89)Wow - it's all happening early in the fourth. Dees hit the post - confirmed in a score review - after the initial call was that it was a goal. The fact that the Dees were scrambling with each other on the line was not good. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:15pm: THREE-QUARTER TIME - Melbourne 10.10 (70) GWS 13.11 (89)The Giants lifted again in that third term after Melbourne worked its way back into the game. It's a very handy lead to the Giants at the last break. Shiel was again good for the Giants, with O'hAilpin adding to his goal tally. For the Dees, Trengove has been tackling hard and trying to put on the pressure, and Grimes has been doing his best, but they don't have much support. The Demons will need to pull out a big last quarter if they are to snatch this one -  and they will have to seriously outscore the Giants, too.And in a further bit of bad news for the Dees, Neville Jetta has been reported for his hit, which was on GWS' Lachie Whitfield. Apologies, I initially thought Treloar was the man hit. Melbourne coach Mark Neeld. Photo: Joe Armao Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:11pm: Q3 - Melbourne 10.10 (70) GWS 13.11 (89)Not long left in the third quarter - just under a minute - and GWS are all over the Dees here. Lead is out to 19 points. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:10pm: Q3 - Melbourne 10.10 (70) GWS 13.11 (89)Downfield free paid to GWS. Treloar was hit by Jetta up the ground and the free was paid inside 50. Then a 50 metre penalty was paid, making it a certain goal to Palmer who took the free. Looks like the 50 was for abuse. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 3:08pm: Q3 - Melbourne 10.10 (70) GWS 12.11 (83)Giants go forward fast, giving Melbourne no time to react, and only and unlucky bounce sees the ball go through for a point rather than a goal. The Dees clear from defence, win a free for the new sliding rule o n the wing, and then Gawn sends a long ball into Jamar in the pocket. He's only about 20 metres out but on a fairly tight angle. The kick is good though! Scores level at the 'G! Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:56pm: Q3 - Melbourne 9.9 (63) GWS 10.9 (69)Oh dear. How did the Giants not score out of that? They broke through the centre and got right in front of goal but O'hAilpin's snap didn't even cross the line. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:55pm: Q3 - Melbourne 9.9 (63) GWS 10.9 (69)Scully is caught in a heavy tackle and Byrnes grabs the loose ball. His snap goes close but no cigar. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:54pm: Q3 - Melbourne 9.8 (62) GWS 10.9 (69)But the Giants can't get it clear enough. Some good work from Jones sees the ball turned over and Tapscott ends up with the ball on 50. His set shot is a shocker though - no score. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:53pm: Q3 - Melbourne 9.8 (62) GWS 10.9 (69)Free kick to GWS deep in the Melbourne forward line. Easy release of pressure there for GWS. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:50pm: Q3 - Melbourne 9.8 (62) GWS 10.9 (69)Oh dear. Mitch Clark takes a grab directly on front but gets the free paid against him for a push on Davis. Fair to say that Clark is less than impressed and feels he has to share his opinion with the umpire. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:48pm: Q3 - Melbourne 9.8 (62) GWS 10.9 (69)Goal Dees! Game has opened up a little in this third term, and it was Rohan Bail who made the Giants pay in this case. He had the running shot from about 50 metres out. Dees only 7 points down now. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:47pm: Q3 - Melbourne 8.8 (56) GWS 10.9 (69)Two points, one for either side, in quick succession. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:46pm: Q3 - Melbourne 8.7 (55) GWS 10.8 (68)Grab by O'hAilpin! And a strong finish from25 out. It was Whitfield who got the ball to Cameron, who sent the ball in to O'hAilpin. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:44pm: Q3 - Melbourne 8.7 (55) GWS 9.8 (62)Goal GWS! What a run from Dylan Shiel. AND a great finish. Mark Neeld less than impressed, not so Giants fans who loved that! Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:43pm: Q3 - Melbourne 8.7 (55) GWS 8.8 (56)Third quarter is off and running and so are the Dees! Mitch Clark has scored the first goal of the second half from a set shot, 21 metres out. Dees now just a point down. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:23pm: HALF TIME - Melbourne 7.7 (49) GWS 8.8 (56)Melbourne are still in touch but the Giants had a massive second term. GWS will be disappointed they let that last goal slip after keeping the pressure up for a quarter. Melbourne slipped back into bad habits, looking nervous in defence with some dodgy-looking handballs as the Giants swooped. Melbourne not out of it by any stretch but they are in no way certainties, and the Giants will take heart from that excellent quarter. Shannon Byrnes has lifted for the Dees, with three goals in that quarter. Shiels has been good for the Giants, with 18 touches. This game is set up for a very intense second half! Tom Scully kicks under pressure from Luke Tapscott. Photo: Getty Images Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:19pm: Q2 - Melbourne 7.7 (49) GWS 8.8 (56)GOAL DEES! From huge pressure to a forward break, the Dees have managed to make their way forward with just 30 seconds to go in the half. Shannon Byrnes was trying to hit up Jamar in the goal square but the ball carried the contest and dribbled through for a goal. Huge relief for Melbourne. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:18pm: Q2 - Melbourne 6.7 (43) GWS 8.8 (56)Dees under huge pressure in defence just a minute out from half time. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:15pm: Q2 - Melbourne 6.7 (43) GWS 8.8 (56)And now the Giants have won a free for shepherding in the ruck and Rhys Palmer will take it. He goes back from 40 metres out on a 45-degree angle and nails the goal. Five in a row the Giants! Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:14pm: Q2 - Melbourne 6.7 (43) GWS 7.8 (50)Nathan Jones is very ginger at the moment, holding his shoulder and grimacing. He is still on the ground and playing, but does not look 100 per cent. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:13pm: Q2 - Melbourne 6.7 (43) GWS 7.8 (50)Goal GWS! Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:12pm: Q2 - Melbourne 6.7 (43) GWS 6.8 (44)Byrnes has taken a very courageous mark on the wing. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:07pm: Q2 - Melbourne 6.7 (43) GWS 4.8 (32)Giants go forward but the Demons' defence forces it through off hands for a rushed behind. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:03pm: Q2 - Melbourne 6.7 (43) GWS 4.7 (31)Goal GWS! Great play Giants. Townsend somehow, while being slung, kept his composure enough to find Treloar witht he ahndpass, who ran inside 50 and finished off the play with a nice goal. Giants stay in touch. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:02pm: Q2 - Melbourne 6.7 (43) GWS 3.7 (25)Phil Davis dealt very nicely with the first ball in to Mitch Clark, but the Giant gave away the free when the ball came back in shortly after. Micth Clark's shot is a shocker though, so Davis gets away with one. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 2:00pm: Q2 - Melbourne 6.6 (42) GWS 3.7 (25)Scrappy kick from Matt Jones was effective, even though he was being tackled as he kicked. He got it inside 50 to Byrnes who marked under pressure, went back, and finished off with a nice goal from about the same distance as the last one. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 1:58pm: Q2 - Melbourne 5.6 (36) GWS 3.7 (25)GWS turns it over again and Dees go forward, with Shannon Byrnes takes a sliding mark about 45 metres out, almost directly in front. He goes back and puts it through with a nice kick. That'll hurt the Giants. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 1:56pm: Q2 - Melbourne 4.6 (30) GWS 3.7 (25)Oh dear. O'hAilpin does all the hard work and takes a nice mark inside 50 - but then plays on under pressure instead of going back and taking the set shot and he misses. What a howler. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 1:53pm: Q2 - Melbourne 4.6 (30) GWS 3.6 (24)Another behind for the Giants after they go forward again. They have deserved more out of their forward drives than they have gotten. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 1:51pm: Q2 - Melbourne 4.6 (30) GWS 3.5 (23)Palmer wins a free for the Giants after copping one high. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 1:48pm: Q2 - Melbourne 4.5 (29) GWS 3.4 (22)Second quarter is under way and O'hAilpin kicked things off with a minor score that would have been a ripper goal from deep in the pocket. Photo: Getty Images 1:44pm: QUARTER TIME - Melbourne 4.5 (29) GWS 3.3 (21)There's the siren, and the Dees have won their first quarter for the year. It was a very scrappy first quarter, with both sides looking shaky at times. For the Giants, O'hAilpin ignited in the forward line, kicking three goals. For the Demons, Nathan Jones has played well, and Sylvia has looked pretty good going forward.  Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 1:41pm: Q1 - Melbourne 4.5 (29) GWS 3.3 (21)Not sure how, but a very shaky GWS defence managed to work the ball out of the Dees' forward line. Lachie Whitfield ended up with the shot from about 50 metres. His kick was not good though, just a minor score.  Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 1:39pm: Q1 - Melbourne 4.5 (29) GWS 3.2 (20)And it's Tom Scully who gets the ball in long and strong to a chorus of boos... and O'hAilpin takes a diving mark right on the goal line! He converts and loves it! Upvotes:1 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 1:38pm: Q1 - Melbourne 4.5 (29) GWS 2.2 (14)Matt Jones takes a leaping mark running back towards goal for the Dees and has the set shot about 45 metres out - no. There's been a free kick paid in the goal square against Mitch Clark - seems he gave Phil Davis one in the guts - and the Giants break forward from the 50 metre line as the free kick was paid from where the ball was held by jones. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 1:35pm: Q1 - Melbourne 4.5 (29) GWS 2.2 (14)Giants scramble it forward after a poor Viney handball caused a turnover in the middle of the ground, but Jack Watts got back and got a fist on the ball before it crossed the line. Just a minor score for the Giants. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 1:34pm: Q1 - Melbourne 4.5 (29) GWS 2.1 (13)And now it's the Dees going forward very quickly and on the way, Howe has taken a specky from in front. How does he leap so high!? But the foray forward results in a minor score. Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 1:33pm: Q1 - Melbourne 4.4 (28) GWS 2.1 (13)Oh dear. Bad turnover by the Dees on half back but they are lucky to get away with conceding just a point as Frawley takes the ball over the line.  Upvotes:0 Downvotes:0 Copy Link 1:31pm: Q1 - Melbourne 4.4 (28) GWS 2.0 (12)But some great play from Watts in defence sees the Dees break down the opposite wing!
