Pasquale fell and fractured her hip during the incident. The Special Investigation’s Unit, the province’s police watchdog, is investigating.Peel Police Const. Thomas Ruttan wouldn’t speak to the case officially, citing the SIU probe. Pasquale’s daughter, Angela, said her mother was holding a bread knife when confronted by police officers at about 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 28. Pasquale, who suffers from dementia and other psychiatric issues, longchamp sale, was out on the street at the time in the area of Thomas St. and Erin Mills Pkwy. Pasquale’s daughter questioned why her mother had to be hit with a stun gun. “Why couldn’t they disarm her without Tasering her?” she asked. She said her mother, who has been a widow for 12 years, will never be the same.“She’s 80. She’s a frail old woman and now her life has changed forever,” she said. “Some compassion and understanding would have been more appropriate.”According to the SIU, at least three officers were present at the scene at the time of the incident. At some point, longchamp le pliage, Pasquale fell fractured her right hip. She was taken to Credit Valley Hospital, where she underwent surgery and received 17 stitches.Pasquale, who previously lived alone, is unable to return to her home because it has stairs and so she remains in hospital while a place is found for her in a retirement residence, her daughter said.SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said the unit, which investigates when members of the public are seriously injured or killed while interacting with officers, was called in by Peel police. She confirmed the SIU is investigating one male officer and has two others listed as witnesses who were at the scene.“The SIU is investigating the interaction and what role the police played with respect to the injury,” said Hudon. She added, “Once the investigative team has done all the interviews they will pass that information to the director to decide whether charges should be laid or not.” The incident occurred just hours after Ontario Community Safety Minister Madeleine Meilleur announced controversial plans to allow police services to expand the use of stun guns. Existing rules limit the use of Taser-style guns to supervising or tactical officers, but the government wants to allow individual police services to set their own policies, as they do in several other provinces.Supporters of the change suggest it will save lives, but others aren’t convinced. The Canadian Civil Liberties Association has called for police to receive better training in dealing with dangerous situations and mental health patients rather than being given new weapons.Mississauga News _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
