{Parkinson SuperWalk planned for Sept. 7}
Kathleen Rowat will be one of hundreds of participants at Parkinson Society’s Ottawa SuperWalk 2013 on Sept. 7 at Britannia Park.Rowat, who holds a PhD in nursing science, will once again be supporting Parkinson SuperWalk with her team, Kitty’s Clan.Parkinson’s is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system that may lead to tremors, rigidity, slowness of movement, gait disorder and a loss of balance.Now 76, Rowat was diagnosed with Parkinson disease in 1999 at the age of 62.“My friends asked each other why I looked so sad,” she says. “I hadn’t felt any symptoms like tremors; it was just my facial expression. My brother, who’s a doctor, picked up on that possibility as well. It had never crossed my mind that that was in my future.”She is now on medication for the disease.“Sometimes the medication seems to be effective, and sometimes less so,” she says. “It has helped me with the difficulty moving and the lack of balance. I’ve had a couple of falls recently.”Rowat retired from teaching at McGill University in the Faculty of Nursing in 1996 and moved to Ottawa in 1997.Seven years ago she and her friends and colleagues formed Kitty’s Clan to support the Parkinson SuperWalk, raising thousands of dollars for the cause.“My nursing background made me realize I didn’t know as much as I thought I did about the disease,” she says. “It has made me want to know more … We need everyone to learn more about the condition and to help fund research towards a cure.”She and her regular “clan” will be there again this year, along with some new members, to support the cause.“The SuperWalk is a great opportunity for those of us with Parkinson’s to network with others in the same situation. It also opens up the possibility of learning about other sources of help and activities that we may not have heard of.”This year’s edition of SuperWalk introduces two new SuperWalks in the communities of Embrun and Brockville, on top of three established walks in Ottawa, Renfrew and Cornwall.Parkinson SuperWalks across Canada raise funds for research, for better treatments and, hopefully, down the road, a cure. Funds raised will also help with education and support services for people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers and make an impact on the lives of over 100,000 Canadians living with Parkinson’s.“We’re all so excited about the new walk location this year,” says Alan Muir, special events and community engagement manager for Parkinson Society Eastern Ontario. “We’ll still have those beautiful paths along the Ottawa River just west of Britannia Beach, but now we have access to the indoor facilities at Lakeside Gardens,woolrich jackets, which will provide some shelter for our participants if we need it.” Last year’s SuperWalk at Andrew Hayden Park was caught in a heavy thunderstorm.“The dedication of walkers like Dr. Rowat, and her team, Kitty’s Clan, is really inspiring,” says Muir. “By returning every year and being so enthusiastic, they’re able to encourage others who are new to this journey.” _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
