St Neots v Cambridge City. City's Josh Dawkin celerbrates scoring the opening goal.9 ImagesSubstitute Joey Abbs netted a late winner as Cambridge City earned their first win of the season in the Calor League, Premier Division with a 2-1 derby victory over St Neots. It looked like the spoils would be shared with the match locked at 1-1, with Adrian Sear having equalised for the hosts following Josh Dawkin’s opener. But Abbs took advantage of some poor St Neots defending to grab the three points for City.City manager Gary Roberts was delighted his side finally grabbed a win after two draws and a defeat.“St Neots have got a reputation for wanting to play good football, and obviously they’ve got a fantastic facility here,Toms Shoes Outlet,” he said. “And Cambridge City want to play good football,Toms Shoes Sale,Cheap Toms, but we always knew it was going to be a tough game.“We should have scored before we did. I thought it was coming but I thought we might have left it too late to be honest. All three of our subs could have had a goal.”Both teams had moved effortlessly from the sublime to the ridiculous as they played out an entertaining game in blazing bank holiday sunshine. It was an even contest in the first half with the score 1-1 after 45 minutes and both teams playing ambitious football. Both goals came in the space of two minutes.A lovely City move ended with Dawkin burying City’s first clear-cut chance in the 31st minute.Sixty seconds later Joe Benjamin, who was at the heart of much of St Neots’ best play, muscled his way on to a long ball from Paul Rodgers and headed it back across goal to Sear, who obligingly hammered the ball home from six yards.Saints started the brighter in the second half, with Ed Adjei moved up front from left-back.A free kick from Bobby-Joe Taylor in the 66th minute found a way through the wall and had City keeper Zac Barrett scrambling to get a hand on it.Barrett’s save sent the ball to the feet of Sear, who blasted a shot into the keeper’s chest. The chances came for City with substitute Nick Beasant sending a shot sailing over the stands when he had time to pick a spot. With players on both sides a little tired after 90 minutes, a St Neots slip up gifted City the three points.Saints centre-back Dan Crowie swept up a dangerous ball and moved into acres of space. But when he played the ball inside, a poor touch by midfielder Jay Davies squirted the ball back the way it had come.Crowie then had his pocket picked and an average pass was made to look impressive by Kelvin Bossman’s fine flick round the corner on to Abbs.Abbs took the ball in his stride, and lashed it into the bottom right-hand corner for an 88th minute winner.St Neots: Heath,Cheap Toms, Rodgers, Adjei (Fuller 77min), Sear, Crowie, Steer, Hilliard, Sharman (Nkinga 46),Toms Shoes Outlet, Benjamin, Davies, Taylor Subs not used: Wood, Palmer, Conroy.Cambridge City: Barrett, Ramm, Brighton, Lawton, Chaffey, Farrell, Lewis, L Allen, Beech (Beasant 68), Bacon (K Bossman 68), Dawkin (Abbs 80).
