{Mumford & Sons have a stomping good time at Holland Park}
SURREY — A consecration. Both for British folk heroes Mumford & Sons and for Surrey's Holland Park, it was a victory lap of spectacular proportions. An estimated 25,000 music fans filled the site Friday night for the first event in this year's Concerts In The Park series now regrouping Holland Park,Toms Shoes Sale, the Malkin Bowl and Deer Lake Park. It was a stomper of a show, the Grammy-winning quartet composed of main Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane lighting up the massive crowd from the stroke of 8 p.m.,Toms Shoes Sale,Toms Shoes Outlet, waves of applause erupting from the front of the stage and rolling back to the rest of the site like rumbling thunder. "We've never played a bigger show than this,Cheap Toms," Mumford said after opener Babel, the title track to the band's sophomore album, which was given the Grammy for album of the year a few months ago. The band may have played major festivals like Coachella to throngs of thousands, but it was effectively the biggest standalone headlining gig the boys from London had ever played. Visibly taken aback by the mass of people staring back at them, Mumford thanked the fans for making this happen before leading his band into stomp-heavy,Cheap Toms, strum-crazy Little Lion Man, where thousands of pairs of hands joined in unison to clap along. Pure love. For close to two hours, Mumford & Sons made Holland Park their own public stomping ground, the site adorned with flags baring the band's logos and designs. Though not an official "Gentlemen of the Road" tour stop (the name of the trek that will see them headline Simcoe, Ont. later this year), both sides of the festival-size stage were adorned with giant banners for that tour. Mumford & Sons' recipe has yielded as many naysayers as hardcore fans, the band becoming the blueprint for the indie neo-folk recipe that has become the staple of the pop landscape these past few years. If The Lumineers are mini-Mumford and Of Monster and Men are the Icelandic version of neo-folk, Mumford & Sons are the Coldplay of the genre. Their hooks are massive, the buildups are incredibly predictable (cue the sweeping Below My Feet), but fans know exactly how to respond. Add a touring fiddle and trumpet,Toms Shoes Outlet, which came in handy when Mumford had to stop the show to signal paramedics to help someone, playing some filler while cracking a few jokes. (As usual, Marcus Mumford handled the stomp with a single kick drum, except for Lover of the Light, where Mumford took a seat behind the drum kit for some proper stick handling )What's more, Mumford & Sons appeal to fans of every stripe and every age, from skinny jean kids to salt-and-pepper haired, middle-aged dads.I Will Wait, with its uptempo bravado and feel-good vibe, lifted the crowd high, one of the standout moments of the evening as the sun finally disappeared behind the tree line at the back of the stage. Mid-set saw the gloomy sound explosion of Thistle & Weeds, all strobes and keys and ominous guitars. "Vancouver's f---ing awesome," Mumford said shortly after, recalling playing an intimate show for radio station The Peak. Times sure have changed since the band played its shambolic Vogue Theatre gig in October 2010 in front of just over 1,000 people. At Holland Park they were megastars, keeping the crowd enraptured during slower moments where the evening chill set in (Ghosts That We Knew, Where Are You Know?) all the way to encore The Cave, a favourite from 2009 debut album Sigh No More that probably registered on a seismograph in California Friday night. Openers Mystery Jets, a more rock-driven type of indie folk band, and British soul troubadour Michael Kiwanuka, who came back to help wrap the show covering The Weight, had set the table nicely for an evening that went without a hitch, save for a hiccup with ticket scanning machines that was quickly fixed and overloaded cell phone systems unable to cope with the fans' social media needs. Mumford & Sons truly kicked off 2013's summer concert season with a bang. Or rather with a mighty stomp. _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
