{'Heartbroken' mum of schoolboy Andy Collings returns to spot where he died by Cambridge river to pay tribute}

Ellan Collings, 37, went to the scene where her son’s body was found on Wednesday morning, and where the family had stood vigil waiting for news.Andy drowned in a tributary of the River Cam near a children’s paddling pool in Lammas Land.Mrs Collings and Andy’s father Andrew Collings, 43, left flowers and a card as friends and wellwishers continued to place their tributes on the bench close to where he died.The distraught mother wrote: “You were first born and my main man. You were my brick and now that brick is in my heart. I will never stop hurting. You will always be with me. “The angels up there will always look after you. I will always love you and you’re always in my heart. Sleep now my baby. Love you always and forever my main man. We will meet again. Wait for me. You will never be alone.”Kelly Wilkinson, 27, of Trumpington, who was yesterday with other families at the shrine to the Netherhall School pupil, said: “Andy’s mum came to lay some flowers and was totally heartbroken. I had to give her a hug. “To lose a child like that is just unthinkable. I used to swim in the river here myself when I was a kid like hundreds of others. It is just so shocking.”Kelly’s brother Tony Cooley, 13, was a year above Andy at Netherhall School and learnt about his death on Wednesday night.He said: “I was very upset but I just couldn’t believe it at first. He was a good kid.”Romi Holliday, 12, was a former neighbour of Andy and was with her father Mike Holliday, 47, to pay tribute.The youngster said: “He was a really funny guy. It is just such a shock. I can’t really believe it.”But families also called for the river to be dredged and for life belts to be in place as well as warning signs.Mr Holliday said: “They should at least have life belts around. They have them in other places. Maybe it would have helped. Maybe he could have been saved.“They know that lots of kids swim here. It’s a no brainer.”It is thought Andy, who also attended St Paul’s Primary School in Cambridge, got into difficulty while in the water just before 6pm on Tuesday. His friends may have thought he was playing a practical joke when he started to struggle after getting into the river, as the News reported.Punters and members of the public out enjoying a warm evening helped the emergency services search for Andy but his body was found seven hours later in the river.It is not illegal to swim in that part of the river but bathers are warned they do so at their own risk, Cam Conservators said.
