Travel back to 1863 harvest time at Booker T. Washington monument
Booker T. Washington National Monument will offer “Harvest Time of 1863,” an educational and fun family event for all ages that portrays life on a mid-19th-century slave-holding tobacco plantation during late summer’s harvest time. The event will be held Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the monument off Virginia 122 in Wirtz.Visitors can explore the park’s structures, gardens and grounds, and experience the culture of subsistence and cash-crop farming that Booker T. Washington would have been familiar with during his childhood in slavery on Burroughs Plantation.Harvest Time will include costumed demonstrations of tasks th #file_links[D:\keywords2.txt,Cheap Toms,1,Toms Shoes Outlet,S] at would have been performed on the farm, such as blacksmithing,Toms Shoes Sale, leather working, wood working, open-hearth cooking, butter churning, broom making, ham curing, soap making, apple drying and the “Apple Man,” who will discuss heirloom var #file_links[D:\keywords1.txt,1,S] ieties of apples. Other demonstrations will include spinning, crocheting, knitting, tatting, embroidery, doll making and pottery .Tina Liza Jones and the Flying Cowboys will provide old-time music, and children’s activities such as gourd painting will be included in the events. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Free horse-drawn wagon rides also will be offered.“In addition to providing a day full of activities for families to have fun economically, Harvest Time serves as a great way to learn hands-on about how our ancestors lived their daily lives,” said monument Superintendent Carla Whitfield. “This event features demonstrations like hearth cooking that make visitors realize just how blessed they are to have a modern stove in which to efficiently cook meals. Rather than merely running to a local store to buy soap, our forbearers had to make lye soap, which we will also demonstrate. Simple demonstrations like these, along with living-history vignettes, will provide visitors with an intimate glimpse into the past. ”As part of the Ci #file_links[D:\keywords5.txt,1,S] vil War’s 150th commemoration, volunteers and rangers at the monument have been conducting living-history programs throughout the year correlating the events of 1863 that took place nationally, #file_links[D:\keywords3.txt,1,S] in the Hales Ford community and on the tobacco farm where Washington was born in 1856.The free event, open to all ages, will be conducted outside so visitors are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather. For more information, visit www.nps.gov/bowa or www.facebook #file_links[D:\keywords4.txt,1,S] .com/btwnm. _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
