High school football notebook: Pittsburg High' #file_links[D:\keywords3.txt,1,S] s Harris Ross having a spectacular senior season - San Jose Mercury News
Harris Ross was hardly a polished player when he began playing organized football as a receiver on Pittsburg High's freshman team. But now that he's up to speed, his high school career has taken off. And on Wednesday, Ross announced via Twitter that he committed to Hawaii."Hawaii's got a new RB! His name is Harris Ross! Just committed .. #WarriorNation," Ross tweeted.Three years since playing tackle football for the first time, Ross has emerged as one of the most electric and productive running backs in the area. The senior broke an East Bay record when he rushed for 464 yards against Monte Vista last week while scoring seven touchdowns. That effort was only part of his rousing start to the 2013 season. After two and a half games, Ross has 778 rushing yards, 12 touchdowns an #file_links[D:\keywords3.txt,1,S] d has the chance to rewrite several sections of Pittsburg's storied record book."He's grown a lot even from last year," Pittsburg coach Victor Galli said. "He's more of a complete running back. He's got size, he's got speed, he's got great vision and good hands. He's the full package. ... Every year he's gotten better and better, but this year he's breaking a lot of tackles and running with a lot of authority."After learning the game as a freshman, Ross spent the offseason running track and watching game film of former Oregon star LaMichael James. Ross was the lead back on an undefeated junior varsity team, then ran behind a pair of seniors last year."I just learned how to always keep my legs pumping," Ross said. "It was exciting playing behind them, even though I was like third-string, it was exciting watching them on the field. It was just a good experience running behind them."But when injuries slowed the other running backs, it was Ross' time to shine. His breakout game was a 269-yard rushing effort against Monte Vista in the North Coast Section playoffs. So when the Pirates and Mustangs played again last week, Monte Vista knew exactly what was coming. The Mustangs committed 10 guys up front, yet Ross still put on a performance for the ages. Then he acknowledged his teammates."My goal going into the game was to get seven touchdowns and more than 300 yards, and my line made it happen for me,Michael Kors Outlet," said Ross, who is 5-foot-11,michael kors canada, 194 pounds.Scholarship interest spiked since his record-breaking game. Before Friday, only Eastern Washington and Sacramento State had offered. Then, several Pac-12, WAC and Mountain West schools had showed interest before Ross committed to the Warriors.PERFECT IN PLEASANTON: Foothill and Amador Valley are a combined 6-0 to open the season for the first time since 2009. It's the schools' best combined start since 2006, when Amador Valley was 5-0 and Foothill won its first 12.Foothill and Amador Valley each own a win over Freedom this season. Falcons coach Matt Sweene #file_links[D:\keywords1.txt,1,S] y was on hand for the Dons' season-opening 35-28 win over Freedom, in which they kept battling after trailing by 14 points three different times."They kept coming back. It kind of reminded me of the team from a year ago," Sweeney said. "It was pretty impressive. They play with great fire. It was a great thing for them and a bad t #file_links[D:\keywords5.txt,1,S] hing for us when we play them."Sweeney also praised his solid core group of seniors who are flying under the radar with the spotlight on the team's marquee juniors."I'm really happy with the toughness we've played with," Sweeney said. "We're not the biggest guys, but we're tough guys."Back in 2009, the Dons and Falcons both lost their fourth games after 3-0 starts. The Falcons fell 35-28 to Granada, and the Dons lost 32-21 to De La Salle, after surprising the Spartans, and just #file_links[D:\keywords4.txt,1,S] about everyone else, by taking a 14-3 lead at halftime. The #file_links[D:\keywords2.txt,1,S] Falcons beat the Dons in 2009, 31-21. This Friday, Foothill hosts Vintage-Napa. Amador Valley has a bye.Staff writer Matt Schwab contributed to this notebook. Follow Stephanie Hammon on Twitter at twitter.com/stephhammon.
