Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the definitive production version of its new GLA, a compact SUV to rival the likes of the Audi Q3,longchamp sale, BMW X1 and, to a lesser extent, the Range Rover Evoque. Seen here in a series of official photographs just four months after Mercedes-Benz pulled the wraps off the more exuberantly styled Concept GLA at the Shanghai motor show back in April, the new five-door crossover will make its first public outing at the upcoming 2013 Frankfurt motor show in September. Australian sales of the new crossover are planned to begin in the second quarter of 2014. Prices are set to start at around $45,000 according to local Mercedes-Benz officials, who suggest it could become one of the German car maker’s biggest selling models here. The GLA is the fourth member of Mercedes-Benz’s latest line-up of compact models, joining the A-Class hatchback, B-Class compact MPV and recently introduced CLA sedan in sharing a common platform structure that uses transversely mounted engines and supports both front- and four-wheel-drive. A fifth member will arrive in late 2014 in the form of a five-door CLA Shooting Brake. Advertisement As largely anticipated, the appearance of the concept GLA has been toned down quite dramatically in creating the production GLA. Along with a number of detailed changes to the front and rear ends to give it a less opposing looking, Mercedes-Benz’s design team have also taken some of the structure out of the surfacing and toned down the detailing. Still, with a distinctive grille housing a three-pointed star badge and characteristic creases within its flanks, it's clearly recognisable as a member of Mercedes-Benz’s compact model family. At 4427mm in length, 1805mm in width and 1495mm in height, the production GLA is 44mm longer, longchamp le pliage, a considerable 173mm narrower and 84mm lower than the Concept GLA. The external dimensions are similar to those of its key compact European crossover rivals. It also rides on a 2699mm wheelbase – the same as that used by all latest A-Class. The GLA is planned to be sold in Australia with a range of turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines in both front- and four-wheel-drive guises. Front-wheel-drive models include the GLA200 with a 115kW 1.6-litre petrol unit and the GLA200 CDI running a 100kW 1.8-litre diesel. They will likely be joined in the local line-up by three four-wheel-drive models, including the GLA250 with a 155kW 2.0-litre petrol engine, GLA220 CDI fitted with a 125kW 2.1-litre diesel and the range-topping GLA45 AMG sporting a highly strung 265kW 2.0-litre petrol unit developed and produced by Mercedes-Benz’s AMG performance car pision. A six-speed manual gearbox will come as standard on the front-wheel-drive models, with Mercedes-Benz’s in-house produced seven-speed dual-clutch automatic appearing on the four-wheel-drive models. It will be optional on all front-wheel-drive models, offering the choice of both manual and automatic operation. Mercedes-Benz is not billing the GLA has an SUV to take you off-road in any big way, but it does suggest it can cope with loose gravel surfaces or sandy tracks with a good degree of authority. The four-wheel-drive system defaults to a front-wheel-drive under normal on-road driving conditions in the interests of fuel saving, but it can send up to 50 per cent of drive to the rear wheels when the road conditions demand it. A downhill speed regulation function is standard on all models with four-wheel drive, helping to maintain a constant speed on downhill gradients. The dual-clutch gearbox boasts an off-road mode, which alters the shift points and throttle mapping for smooth progress away from the bitumen. Official fuel economy figures are impressive; the most efficient model in the line-up, the GLA200 CDI, returns 4.3L/100km on the combined European cycle, for average CO2 emissions of 114g/km. Mercedes-Benz has given its latest model all the most recent fuel saving features, including automatic stop/start. The inclusion of an almost flat underbody, pressure reducing elements within wheel wells and active radiator grille shutters to smooth airflow at higher speeds helps to contribute to a drag co-efficient among the best in class at 0.29. Inside, the GLA offers a significantly higher driving position and more commanding view of the road than any of Mercedes-Benz’s other compact models. At 549mm, the driver seat is set 273mm higher than that in the A-Class. Overall, the new crossover provides seating for up to five. The dashboard and interior features are carried over from the A-Class, B-Class and CLA-Class. Boot space is put at 421 litres, rising to 836 litres when the rear seat is folded down. In keeping with other recent new Mercedes-Benz models, the GLA comes with an impressive range of safety features. Included is the drowsiness detecting Attention Assist, Collision Prevention Assist that operates at speeds from 7km/h and a more advanced Collision Prevention Assist Plus function that, in combination with the optional Distronic Plus cruise control, provides full autonomous braking at speeds up to 200km/h for impact avoidance. There is also a long list of infotainment features, including full smart phone integration, internet connectivity, applications such as Facebook and Twitter, and street view on the navigation system all offered as part of a compressive number of options. _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
