{Inside Performance hoping to be a big hit in the baseball business}
Blair Peters,Michael Kors Handbags Outlet, Inside Performance: “we were adamant this place had a value to the community in North Van”|Dominic SchaeferBob MackinTue Mar 19, 2013 12:01am PSTWest Vancouver’s Blair Peters created a homegrown baseball cartoon; now he’s part of a group of baseball aficionados helping to cultivate the next Justin Morneau, Brett Lawrie and Ryan Dempster.The co-founder in 1988 of Studio B Productions, the Gastown production house behind D’Myna Leagues, is among a group of investors who stepped in to rescue North Vancouver’s Inside Performance when its finances were bottom of the ninth, with two out. It was an opportunity that Peters had been mulling since Studio B was bought by DHX Media (TSX:DHX) in 2007.“I was talking to a friend, saying the missing thing in West Van at the time, with rainy days, was a place for kids to hit,michael kors canada,” Peters told Business in Vancouver. “A friend said, ‘Hey,Michael Kors Handbags, you should talk to Stephan Grisbrook, the previous owner.’ We had all the plans out; his vision was much bigger than mine. I had a batting cage; he had a whole facility.”Grisbrook, a commercial pilot, opened the 4,Michael Kors Handbags Outlet,500-square-foot facility near the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge in 2011.Last year, Peters and four others pooled their funds – $5,000 to $10,000 each – to keep the space open and develop a long-term business plan.“We didn’t need another machine shop or whatever was going to come in here,” Peters said. “We were adamant that this place had a value to the community in North Van. We feel we need about $150,000 a year in corporate sponsorship so we can run this the way we want to run it. The doors are open; people are in.”Peters,Michael Kors Outlet, a North Shore Girls Fastpitch Association coach, has three daughters, aged 11, 14 and 16, who play fast pitch. Inside Performance clients also include the Sentinel secondary baseball academy.Now is a good time to sell the future of baseball. B.C. is a destination for Major League Baseball scouts, and the Toronto Blue Jays, parent of the Vancouver Canadians,Michael Kors Outlet, went shopping for free agents in a bid to win their first World Series since 1993.“There’s been players in here that are training to get a scholarship in the U.S., there’s been players that are drafted to go to spring training in the next few weeks,michael kors canada, there’s kids training just to learn the sport and there’s kids that come in to have fun, hit a ball and no aspirations,” Peters said.General manager Wes Taylor and staff coach Brooks McNiven oversee the company’s day-to-day operations. McNiven is a former University of BC Thunderbirds’ pitcher who was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 2003’s 4th round and a member of Canada’s team at the 2008 Olympics.“It’s really important to have a place like this,Michael Kors Handbags,” McNiven said. “Baseball for a good portion of the year, we’re not able to be outside, so a place like this allows the kids to come inside and work out and continue to hone their skills and improve their game.”It’s not the first time Peters has been able to express his love for baseball in business. Studio B produced D’Myna Leagues from 2000 to 2006 for CTV, YTV and WB Network. In 2007, DHX Media bought Studio B from Peters and partner Chris Bartleman.“We enjoyed it,” Peters said, “but it was time to move on.”Peters worked for four years with DHX on productions like Kid vs. Kat for Disney. He’s also involved in Vintage Sports Images, an as-seen-on Dragons’ Den company managed by Eric Olsen that acquires rare negatives of sports icons for reprinting and framing.“They have a real artistic feel to them, by virtue of the shape the negative was in, the style, how it printed,” Peters said. “There’s a lot of collectors out there looking for that nugget.”Tags: sports, San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, Disney, Vancouver Canadians, entrepreneur
