OTTAWA — People across Ontario are being asked to report where they see chimney swifts, a small, swallow-like bird that nests in old-fashioned brick chimneys. The survey, organized by the environmental charity Bird Studies Canada, brightest, moncler down jackets, is intended to help the swifts, whose population has fallen sharply in recent years for unknown reasons. There could also be a legal catch in the future: Once a species is officially endangered (as the swifts are), regulations to protect its habitat often follow quickly. And reporting that a swift lives in a specific chimney could force the property owner to maintain an old, crumbling chimney in its original condition (with no modern metal liners) virtually forever.Ontario has been drafting regulations this year to protect “significant wildlife habitat,” from tadpole ponds to farm fields where ducks land during migration.Bird Studies Canada says it hopes there won’t be restrictive measures involving chimney swifts. With the birds in trouble of some unknown type, “the first thing (to do) is get a picture of where the species is and what kind of habitat they’re using, and from there we can move forward,” said the organization’s Kathy Jones. The birds once nested in big, hollow trees, moncler down jackets, but relocated to chimneys once humans started building them, discount moncler jackets,China to invest in 3 mln hectares of Ukrainian far, she said. Logging likely drove them out of the forests, womens moncler down coat, she added. They like larger chimneys, such as those on churches or hospitals, but sometimes settle in houses. The birds cling to a rough surface inside the chimney, moncler outlet, building nests that stick there and that are incompatible with metal linings.“We don’t believe (the number of) chimneys are a limiting factor at this time, but there are a finite number of chimneys, and there are not going to be more built because present-day housing practices don’t use these chimneys,” she said.“If we can protect the chimney versus tearing it down that would be a positive thing. We ensure that the habitat is maintained.”It’s possible that future regulations will restrict development of buildings with old chimneys, she said.“At this point we don’t know. It’s something that would have to be approached in the future.” She said someone may develop ways to protect aging brick chimneys at no extra cost.Chimney repair companies say that’s not likely. It costs thousands of dollars to do basic masonry chimney repairs, with government requirements on scaffolding and other safety measures, said Bill Townshend of Townshend Chimneys, a five-generation-old family firm in Toronto.Add a requirement to use old-fashioned liners instead of modern steel ones and it’s even more expensive he said. And it has to be re-done every 20 to 30 years.“It’s not cheap by any means. It’s obviously cheaper to tear the chimney down, moncler on sale, plug up the roof, and roof over.”For now the only goal is to learn more about the species, Jones said. It has lost more than 90 per cent of its numbers in four decades; “that’s not a minor number to look at.”Those interested in participating should call the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority. _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
