Each will offer a maximum 18-minute talk on issues ranging from the future of the world's oceans to biohacking – the practice of managing your own biology, nutritionally, electronically or otherwise, for the most gain.Seattle-based technology consultant Amal Graafstra, a speaker at the event, knows a thing or two about the latter subject. Tired of lugging around his bulky key chain and being forced into an all-too regular dance of juggling bags and boxes while trying to fish his keys out of his pocket, Graafstra longed for an easier system."I wanted to get rid of that keychain," he said. "I wanted to get in the door with minimal effort. I wanted the door to know it was me."Technologies like eye readers and palm readers existed, but Graafstra said they were unreliable.So he turned to radio-frequency identification access cards, without the card.In March 2005, Graafstra went to a plastic surgeon and had a low-frequency RFID tag implanted in his left hand. The tag is what he uses to open his office door. Two months later,[url=http://www.moncler-sale.org]moncler on sale[/url], he had another tag implanted in his right hand. He uses that one to start his motorcycle.The technology is simple. Each RFID tag comes with a unique ID, or password. A user implants a RFID reader on a door or vehicle – or anything else he or she wants to operate with the tag – and programs it to recognize that password. Once that recognition is established through a weak wireless electromagnetic field, the RFID tag can perform its intended task.Graafstra isn't alone in this pursuit. Some Grinders are getting magnets implanted in their fingers so they can sense magnetic fields. Others are experimenting with implanted tracking devices.That trend will be the topic of Graafstra's talk at SFU."These types of things are being done, and they are not just being done in laboratories," said Graafstra, who has recently started Dangerous Things, a business that sells RFID tags and injection kits to Grinders."People are doing this in their garages. They aren't waiting for someone to tell them it's OK.
