{Business groups sigh with relief over Liberals' decisive win}
Christy Clark, BC Liberal Party leader|Times ColonistBy Jen St. Denis and Richard Macedo (www.dailyoilbulletin.com)Wed May 15, 2013 9:08am PST"There has never been a better time to be this wrong about an election."That's Iain Black's summation of the collective feelings of Vancouver's business community the morning after the B.C. Liberals upset projections to win a fourth consecutive term."The prospect of change, not being sure what all the implications are or would be,discount moncler jackets, is something that caused a great deal of angst [in the business community] over the past few weeks and months," the president and CEO of the Vancouver Board of Trade told Business in Vancouver.By the time the dust had settled last night, the Liberals had won a majority government with 50 seats, while the NDP took 33. Up until Monday, polls had steadily predicted an NDP win. But the party ended up losing three seats they had held before the election.In just one of many close races across the province, Christy Clark lost her Vancouver-Point Grey riding to NDP candidate David Eby.But Greg D'Avignon,moncler outlet, president and CEO of the Business Council of BC,moncler on sale, gave Clark full marks for running what he called a "clear and decisive" campaign."I think the clear message here is that the economy matters, and that business certainty matters," said D'Avignon,moncler sale, adding that the premier evidently managed to push that point home beyond the ranks of business people.D'Avignon and Black say there is still more work to be done to make the province business-friendly. Those issues include:improving B.C.'s productivity rate;dealing with the recently reintroduced PST;working to encourage resource extraction; andmaintaining B.C.'s status as a gateway to Asia."We have to come to terms with the reliance that we have on the oil and gas sector,moncler down jackets, on the forestry sector,moncler sale," said Black. "And make sure you're sending the right messages of investment and job creation and building communities across the province."Resource industry groups also expressed relief at the outcome.Gary Leach, president of The Explorers and Producers Association of Canada, said, “There will be less uncertainty about the direction of the province and the Liberals’ vision for future prosperity is built on the LNG industry. That provides a foundation for a practical and beneficial relationship that can benefit all British Columbians.”Leach added that, hopefully, over the course of a new mandate, the Clark government can be convinced to endorse Enbridge Inc.’s Northern Gateway project and the proposed expansion of Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline.“I think those conversations will start at various levels,” he said. “It would be useful to allow the regulatory review process to be completed and see what conditions might be attached to them before reaching a decision.”Geoff Morrison, B.C. operations manager with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, noted his group already has a long-standing working relationship with the BC Liberals so the election result likely means a smoother transition period.“It probably means less government restructuring or reorganization, but obviously CAPP will work with any government, regardless of its stripe,” he said.jstdenis@biv.com@jenstdenTags: economy, employment,moncler on sale,moncler outlet, Christy Clark, provincial elections, Vancouver Board of Trade,moncler down jackets, provincial government,discount moncler jackets, Iain Black _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
