That's 5% higher than the national average number of Canadians who have cut out gluten-rich staples like bread and beer.Overall, the primary reasons for adopting a gluten-free diet are health-related. About 21% said they had a gluten intolerance and 15% said they had a specific medical condition.The growing awareness of celiac disease and gluten intolerance is building a fast-growing market in Canada. According to market research firm Packaged Facts, the Canadian gluten-free market has grown to $450 million in 2012, having experienced a 26.6% annual growth rate since 2008. Increasing availability in major supermarkets and improved product quality has helped boost the market.But B.C. residents were also the most likely in the country to have tried a gluten-free or gluten-reduced diet in the past six months.
