{Forestry report: The $500,000 view}
Tourism operators on the east coast of Vancouver Island feel stymied in their efforts to keep logging out of areas that tourists will seeBy Jen St. DenisTue Jul 2,discount moncler jackets, 2013 9:57am PSTAn ecotourism business on the east coast of Vancouver Island is trying to put a price tag on a view.Members of the Discovery Islands Marine Tourism Group have offered to pay TimberWest (TSX:TWF.UN) around $500,000 to keep one side of West Cracroft Island, located on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island,moncler on sale, from being cut."The idea was we were asking for a covenant to be placed on the trees," said Breanne Quesnel, a co-owner of Spirit of the West Adventures. "Tell us that you're not going to cut them for 20 years, and we'll pay you a fair price for not cutting them."But so far TimberWest, the company that plans to do the harvesting on West Cracroft, isn't taking them up on the offer.It's the latest clash between tourism operators and forestry companies, who both have tenured rights to use B.C.'s Crown land. It follows incidents in the Cariboo, where horse-ranch owners saw trails and viewscapes damaged by accelerated logging to deal with the mountain pine beetle (see sidebar).In both cases, tourism operators have complained that there has not been enough consultation or concessions about logging decisions they say will cause them to lose business.Forestry Minister Steve Thomson told Business in Vancouver that resolving the issue is one of his top priorities.For Quesnel, the problem started in the spring of 2011. That's when she and other staff from Spirit of the West Adventures, which offers guided sea-kayaking trips, arrived at their base campsite on West Cracroft Island and found logging tape."It was quite concerning because it was so close to where we were and to the water," said Quesnel.While TimberWest was the tenure holder of that particular cut block, other tourism business owners in the area are also concerned about cuts on other islands planned by Interfor (TSX:IFP.A) and BC Timber Sales (BCTS), a government-operated harvester."One of the most egregious cuts that's being planned is by BCTS. … We told them two years ago when they first put it on the table that this is going to be a very contentious issue and it's a very high-tourism-value area,moncler outlet," said Ralph Keller, the owner of Coast Mountain Expedition."All they did was go away and modify their cut blocks a little bit."Keller and Quesnel said that they're not opposed to all logging in the area, but object to logging along the kayaking routes most often used by the outdoor guide businesses.From the forestry industry's point of view, concessions have already been made. Logging will not be done in the summer, and BCTS has agreed to take the timber away by barge rather than by boom. TimberWest has offered to take the trees out over three years instead of one."Changing the block boundaries and changing how wood is barged out is expensive," saidDwight Yochim, executive director of the Truck Loggers Association. "It's a cost to the company who's doing that work."Taking specific cut blocks off the roster entirely would amount to a very bad business decision, said Domenico Iannidinardo,moncler sale, chief forester for TimberWest."If we did not harvest here or we had to harvest differently than we typically do … we would lose money or we would not be able to pay for the operations," said Iannidinardo.But Keller and Quesnel argue that if the logging goes ahead,moncler down jackets, their businesses will be the ones paying the price."We had somebody say … you run a great trip, we had a good time, but frankly the industrialization of the foreshore is too much and next time I decide on a wilderness experience I'm going to the American parks system," said Keller.The Ministry of Forests has tasked Rory Annett, executive director for coastal projects, to mediate between the two sides.He believes that it is possible for the two industries to exist side by side. Annett said that, currently,moncler down jackets, all options are on the table: no logging, a change in the type of logging or business as usual.Iannidinardo said TimberWest will continue to meet with the tourism operators this month. While the company did reject the group's offer in September 2012 to buy out the cut block, he said his company is still open to considering that option."That'll be part of the discussion in July," he said.As to how the small tourism businesses would raise the cash, Quesnel said it would likely be done through a combination of loans, fundraising and grants."Our economic argument alone – as one company out of many who use this area – is strong enough that in four-and-a-half years, we'll make the same revenue that TimberWest will on a 60-year rotation with that forest," she said. •Tags: Steve Thomson,moncler outlet, parks,moncler on sale, water, Quesnel,discount moncler jackets, Truck Loggers Association, forests,moncler sale, tourism
