{B.C. forestry sector split on NDP platform}
Doug Routledge, head of the Council of Forest Industries: agrees with NDP's assessmentBy Jen St. DenisTue Apr 23, 2013 12:01am PSTThe two distinct associations that represent B.C.’s coastal and Interior forest industries are split in their reception of the NDP’s forestry platform,moncler outlet, which was revealed April 15.The plan’s increased forest management funding and reintroduction of the job protection commissioner irked Rick Jeffery,moncler on sale, president and CEO of the Coastal Forest Products Association.But Doug Routledge, president of the Council of Forest Industries (COFI), which represents companies operating in the Interior, said the platform showed that the B.C. NDP had been listening to his industry’s concerns. “One of the positives that we see in the platform is an acknowledgement that an industry that can make a profit, and then reinvest that profit into manufacturing facilities, is a more stable industry,” said Routledge.The NDP’s platform includes:•$100 million over five years to improve forest management;•better access to skills training;•supporting industry’s efforts to access international markets ;•reducing raw log exports and increasing value-added jobs; and•establishing a job protection commissioner to minimize job loss and help communities transition, especially in areas hit by the pine beetle infestation.Jeffery said he was concerned that the NDP plan would unnecessarily increase the size of government, with more ministry staff hired to do work he said the industry can do itself. “[Since 2001],moncler sale,moncler down jackets, we’ve been … relying more and more on professionals to say this is the way it should be done,” said Jeffery. “That’s different from the government [sending] cops out there to make sure you’re doing things right.”He was also not impressed with the possible return of the job protection commissioner, a position the Liberals eliminated in 2002.“There were very few things that a job protection commissioner could do to help maintain jobs that were being lost,” said Jeffery. “The jobs were being lost for a reason, and trying to fly in the face of that wasn’t very effective.”Routledge said COFI shares the NDP’s concern that forest inventory is woefully out of date.“We have not maintained the resource inventories in this province … We don’t need a Cadillac, we sure as heck can’t afford a Cadillac, but we do need the Chevrolet of inventories.”Routledge was also sanguine about the plan to bring back the jobs protection commissioner, saying COFI supports efforts to create as many jobs as possible – provided forestry firms are supported in their quest to be competitive and stay profitable.The Interior continues to struggle with the aftermath of the pine beetle, an issue that does not affect coastal operations. Experts expect several more mills to close in the next few years because of timber supply shortfalls.•A ‘haphazard approach’ to job creation, critic saysNorm Macdonald,moncler outlet, NDP forest critic, said the recent government decisions on which mills to help have been inconsistent and that reinstating the job protection position, eliminated in 2002, would help standardize government’s approach to mills that are in trouble.“The approach has been haphazard,” said Macdonald. “In Barrier, there’s nothing done when the mill was lost; in Burns Lake,discount moncler jackets, Premier [Christy] Clark promises to reopen the mill.”Tags: Council of Forest Industries,moncler on sale,moncler sale, exports,discount moncler jackets,moncler down jackets, inventories, Burns Lake
