Greg Salloum, owner, and Brenda Rayburn, director marketing, Best Western Plus Kelowna Hotel & Suites: strong focus on caring for the environment |Baila LazarusBy Cat HughesTue Aug 27, 2013 12:01am PSTNot only is Greg Salloum owner of the Best Western Plus Kelowna Hotel & Suites, his organic farm supplies the hotel’s restaurant, Ora,moncler on sale, with potatoes, moncler sale, carrots, beets, peas, moncler down jackets, squash, cucumbers, asparagus and other fresh produce.“This is my second year growing organic vegetables,” Salloum said. “Time-wise it’s a challenge, but working in the field part of the day and the office for the other part, moncler outlet, moncler on sale, I feel great.”The Kelowna hotelier’s commitment to green extends even further. Besides a LEED silver environmental wing, his inn uses 37% less energy and 40% less water than typical buildings in the industry and boasts a solar-panel water-heating system that supplies 90% of the hotel’s energy for heat in summer and 60% in winter. While achieving these savings has required substantial investment, Salloum said he wouldn’t do it any other way.“We aim to be a good corporate citizen and part of that is recognizing that we are a wasteful industry and we need to take better care of Mother Earth.”Thanks to its green credentials, many businesses choose to hold meetings and events at the Best Western Plus Kelowna.According to Brenda Rayburn, director of sales and marketing for the hotel, “It has become a market segment of its own. Companies from all sectors are becoming more aware and informed on environmental sustainability.”The hotel belongs to the Green Key meetings program, which gives it an independent certification for its green operations.“We in the hotel business take the environment very seriously,” said Tony Pollard, moncler sale, president of the Hotel Association of Canada. “The Green Key program is one of our industry initiatives to assist the environment.”In B.C., a number of venues have similarly put sustainability at the heart of their operations, including the carbon-neutral Inn at Laurel Point in Victoria. The hotel has its own triple bottom line: people, planet and profit.“We don’t just do it to look good and give marketing another angle to sell; we do it because it’s the right thing to do,” said general manager Ian Powell, adding that it doesn’t take a huge investment and big projects to be sustainable.Take Whistler’s Nita Lake Lodge, where a number of small projects – including a geothermal system and an organic rooftop garden – make a big difference. According to GM Mike Duggan, these small stories come together to make the lodge successful, particularly with larger groups. But do guests really care about sustainable venues? Yes, said Amy Ballard, director of sales and marketing for Vancouver’s Opus boutique hotel.“Our guests really do care about the environment and we have a responsibility to them and to ourselves to make the right choices, discount moncler jackets,” Ballard said. “Our close proximity to [public transit] has won us conference business when the decision-makers have been motivated by the opportunity [for] their groups [to use] public transport.”•Tags: sustainability, tourism, transport, moncler outlet, public transit, moncler down jackets, discount moncler jackets, energy _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
