George Ehrler and Marla Limousin of Blue Moon Winery: eight awards from the Finger Lakes Wine CompetitionBy Goody NiosiTue May 14,discount moncler jackets, 2013 12:01am PSTGrape wineries in B.C. have long been destinations for tasting tours but now award-winning fruit wineries are gaining attention.Courtenay's Blue Moon Winery and Coastal Black Estate Winery, came away big winners at March's Finger Lakes Wine Competition in New York, where 3,moncler down jackets,505 wines from 20 countries strutted their stuff.Blue Moon, owned by the husband-and-wife team of George Ehrler and Marla Limousin, brought home eight medals. Limousin said that they had been entering the competition and winning medals each year for the past four years, ever since they started making wine. This year, the winners included apple, pear, moncler sale, blackberry and raspberry wines. Fruit wine has a long history in Europe, Limousin said, but it has some catching up to do before it achieves the popularity of grape wine. For that, moncler outlet, moncler on sale, the French can be blamed. Fruit wines were long considered a "poor person's" beverage, and when the wine industry took off, France banned them.In countries like Germany and Switzerland, however, the art of fruit winemaking remained alive. Today North Americans are discovering their appeal."We've got a really young following," Limousin said. "Twenty to 35-year-olds would be our demographic. They are really excited about fruit wine. They're adventurous and they want that unique flavor."Limousin and Ehrler purchased their organic blueberry farm in 1999 after spending some years in Nunavut and then on Saltspring Island.Until 2004 they raised and sold certified organic blueberries. But Ehrler, whose parents were Swiss, knew about the great European fruit wines."We were looking for a value-added product to supplement income," Limousin said. "George just started playing around with some wine and really enjoyed it, so we made the big commitment and bought all the equipment – and he's been playing ever since."The couple is in the fourth year of their five-year plan. They are selling their wine locally and want to expand to wine stores farther south on Vancouver Island.Coastal Black Estate Winery also brought home four medals from the same competition. Owner Abel O'Brennan has been scoring non-stop in the three years since the family farm converted from dairy to fruit. In its first Finger Lakes competition, the winery won four of four and six of six in year two. This year's winners included two sparkling raspberry and blackberry wines, moncler on sale, a blueberry table wine and blueberry mead. The farm covers 650 acres with about 120 in fruit; Coastal Black has the distinction of being the largest cultivated blackberry grower in Canada. The winery got started when a new generation took over the dairy farm."Nobody was really super excited about getting up at 3 a.m. and milking cows any more," O'Brennan said. "But everybody still wanted to be here in various forms of agriculture."Today, moncler outlet, O'Brennan's younger brother-in-law is a beekeeper who provides honey for mead; the older one does custom timber cutting, and O'Brennan's father-in-law shares in the fruit management. O'Brennan said that fruit wine makes far more sense than grape wine in the coastal climate."Our climate is really suitable for ripening things like blackberries, blueberries and raspberries, whereas grape growers – it's a struggle to ripen them this far north."O'Brennan has big plans for his winery. One of them includes exporting to Shanghai and Tokyo within the year, a deal he said he'd been working on for some time and that has finally come to fruition."People tend to think of fruit wines as something that grandpa makes in the basement, moncler down jackets," he said. "Doing things like winning medals shows that there's another level – there's potential for really good quality wines." •Tags: culture, agriculture, moncler sale, tourism, beverage
