Trevor Linden, moncler outlet, owner, Club 16 Trevor Linden Fitness: I like the fact it’s a voluntary initiative that involves CEOs or business leaders getting behind making workplaces safer for their employees. That’s something that we would have welcomed in the National Hockey LeagueBy Baila LazarusTue Jul 16,moncler down jackets, 2013 12:01am PSTManufacturing, construction and resources are typical areas where workplace safety would garner attention. But a new association is attempting to have safety issues front and centre in every business in B.C.Formed just under two years ago by the FIOSA-MIOSA Safety Alliance of BC,discount moncler jackets, the BC Safety Charter is calling upon CEOs and other senior executives to declare their intention to create safer work environments.“One of the messages is that the safety charter is really for senior executives,” said Daneen Skilling, board chair, FIOSA-MIOSA, and national environment, moncler sale, health and safety manager, Andrew Peller Ltd., which was an original signatory to the charter. “It’s about a public proclamation about their willingness to create a workplace culture that values and believes in a safe workplace; because CEOs set the tone for a safe workplace.” The idea for the charter came after an assessment of injury rates in B.C. measured by the BC Food Processors and Manufacturers Association. In 2008, injury rates were at 7.1 workers per 100 in food processing and 4.6 per 100 in food manufacturing. After identifying areas of potential harm and putting in place systems to reduce risk, those rates were reduced to 4.8 and 3.3 respectively in 2010. The result was $8 million in savings.“It was decided that all industry in the province could benefit from the same approach, and in October 2011, the safety charter was launched with 22 signatories from every industry in B.C.,” said Ben Hume, steering committee chair for the BC Safety Charter. The main reason for the success was seen to be buy-in from top management. Even the signing of the charter in itself is setting executives on a new course.“We had our most senior executive for our operations group in Western Canada [Doug Gallagher] sign the charter, moncler sale,” said Skilling. “He always thinks safety. He’s a strong supporter of it. By signing the safety charter, it awakened in him the need to start the conversation more broadly and engage the community.”Business owner, moncler down jackets, moncler outlet, product spokesman and former Canuck Trevor Linden is also a signatory.“The safety charter was a good fit because I’ve dealt with a lot of safety issues in hockey and was part of the competition committee, which tried to make the players’ environment safer and the game,” Linden said.“I like the fact it’s a voluntary initiative that involves CEOs or business leaders getting behind making workplaces safer for their employees. That’s something that we would have welcomed in the National Hockey League.”In his own business, moncler on sale, Club 16 Trevor Linden Fitness, Linden said they are in the review process, assessing whether there are any risk areas.“I hadn’t given workplace safety a lot of thought, discount moncler jackets,” said Linden. “When you think of workplace safety, you think of factory floors and equipment and that sort of thing, but it extends across the board.“The great thing about the safety charter is they’ll have people come in and assess your operation and make recommendations. They’re not forcing you to do anything. ... They’re just saying, ‘We’re experts in the field. This is where we see you may have a problem in the future. This is where you can improve your operation.’”Identifying specific problem areas is only one of the safety charter’s goals.“The charter is more about creating a culture around safety, to engage employees so that they bring up the smaller issues that might not normally be discussed,” said Skilling. “The other component that excites me is that it’s a forum for senior execs to get together and share their practices and challenges with each other.”Added Linden:“The great thing is it can lead to a more efficient, better way of doing things.”Tags: Ben Hume, Trevor Linden, human resources, moncler on sale, Andrew Peller Ltd., National Hockey League, management, food _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
