But a new association is attempting to have safety issues front and centre in every business in B.C.Formed just under two years ago by the FIOSA-MIOSA Safety Alliance of BC,[url=http://www.moncler-sale.org]discount moncler jackets[/url], the BC Safety Charter is calling upon CEOs and other senior executives to declare their intention to create safer work environments.“One of the messages is that the safety charter is really for senior executives,” said Daneen Skilling, board chair, FIOSA-MIOSA, and national environment,[url=http://www.moncler-sale.org]moncler sale[/url], health and safety manager, Andrew Peller Ltd., which was an original signatory to the charter. “It’s about a public proclamation about their willingness to create a workplace culture that values and believes in a safe workplace; because CEOs set the tone for a safe workplace.” The idea for the charter came after an assessment of injury rates in B.C. measured by the BC Food Processors and Manufacturers Association. In 2008, injury rates were at 7.1 workers per 100 in food processing and 4.6 per 100 in food manufacturing.After identifying areas of potential harm and putting in place systems to reduce risk, those rates were reduced to 4.8 and 3.3 respectively in 2010. The result was $8 million in savings.“It was decided that all industry in the province could benefit from the same approach, and in October 2011, the safety charter was launched with 22 signatories from every industry in B.C.,” said Ben Hume, steering committee chair for the BC Safety Charter.The main reason for the success was seen to be buy-in from top management. Even the signing of the charter in itself is setting executives on a new course.“We had our most senior executive for our operations group in Western Canada [Doug Gallagher] sign the charter,[url=http://www.moncler-sale.org]moncler sale[/url],” said Skilling. “He always thinks safety. He’s a strong supporter of it.
