Unions are also still active in taking on apprentices.That reluctance is now closing the door to the traditional way of becoming an apprentice: finding an employer to hire you as an apprentice for four years while you complete a combination of practical and in-school training.Evans said the ITA has surveyed employers and discovered a number of reasons companies are not hiring potential apprentices, including a perception that apprentices are not as productive, that they don't provide a financial return to the business and that they will be poached by another company at the end of their apprenticeship. For the most part, the assumptions aren't borne out by reality."The research shows that by investing in an apprentice, you are also earning their loyalty and you stand a much better chance of retaining an employee than if you had not," he said.The organization is currently developing a coaching program to guide apprentices through the process.In response to industry demand, the ITA is also looking at creating programs to give students more technical training before they hit the job site.On the policy front, Reiser said he'd like to see more work done to make it easier for apprentices to get employment insurance when they leave their job to complete the classroom part of their education.
