Teresa Wat, new MLA for Richmond Centre, moncler sale, has worked as a journalist in Vancouver and Hong KongBy Jen St. DenisTue Aug 13, 2013 12:01am PSTTeresa Wat heads up the newly created Ministry of International Trade; she’s also the minister responsible for the government’s Asia Pacific strategy and for multiculturalism. She represents Richmond Centre.Wat is a rookie MLA, but she’s no stranger to the workings of government. In the 1990s,discount moncler jackets, the former journalist worked as a communications manager for several provincial government ministries in Glen Clark’s government.Wat trained and worked as a journalist in Hong Kong before immigrating to B.C. in 1989. She said her experience working in Asia and her fluency in Mandarin and Cantonese make her a good candidate for the international trade file. Business in Vancouver recently spoke with Wat about her new post. Cabinet Q&AQ: You’re a new MLA and this is a new ministry. What have been some of the challenges in setting up this ministry?A: The British Columbian government has been promoting international trade since … they took over as government. It’s just that this term, the premier made it a point to create a new ministry so that the minister can devote more time and effort on this file. I won’t say that this is a new challenge … [but] there will be more focused effort, especially on the Asia Pacific strategy.Q: What are your key priorities for the ministry?A: A key priority will be the Asian head office strategy. [We want] to make B.C. the first choice when it comes to Asian companies relocating to British Columbia. We have a goal to attract five [Asian companies’] North American headquarters to B.C. by 2020.We have achieved our B.C. jobs plan commitment to double our international trade and investment network. We have new offices open in India, in Chandigarh and Mumbai [opened in December 2012] and the next one is Hong Kong [opened January 2013]. The total number of staff in our head offices is rising from 29 to just over 60,discount moncler jackets, mostly in Asia but in the U.S. and Europe as well. With this increased level of staff, moncler down jackets, we are able to focus on our priority sectors and increase our investment leads.Q: How will you achieve the goal of opening five new head offices in B.C.?A: Our ministry will be working with BC Business Council on talking to all the big corporations. We have been working on that and that’s why we set the goal at five.Q: It’s often said that B.C. has a special relationship with Asia, but we’re also competing with other regions for Asian trade. What could we be doing more of to become more competitive?A: We really look forward to working with our federal government and other provinces on the negotiation of agreements with a number of key markets, moncler outlet, like the Trans Pacific Partnership, moncler on sale, India, Korea and China … B.C.’s role in international negotiations has taken on even greater importance. Through trade negotiations, moncler sale, we can also enhance our exporters’ association to traditional markets like the U.S. and the E.U.Q: Do you have your first trade mission planned?A: We’re still in the early planning days, but I can tell you that we’re committed to having at least one minister-led training mission every year.•Tags: Glen Clark, moncler down jackets, moncler on sale, Asia Pacific, international trade, trade agreements
