{Jobs minister drives BC Liberals' agenda}
Shirley Bond first joined the B.C. cabinet in 2001. Before that,moncler on sale, she served three terms on school board in Prince GeorgeBy Glen KorstromTue Jul 30,moncler on sale, 2013 12:01am PSTShirley Bond,moncler down jackets, B.C.'s Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training,moncler sale, has been in public life for close to 20 years and has been in cabinet since 2001, when former premier Gordon Campbell appointed her to her first of six portfolios,moncler outlet, minister of education.The BC Liberals' successful May election campaign focused on job creation and the party's B.C. Jobs Plan, so Bond sees her role as central to the government's mandate. One of her main goals is to increase the province's annual tourism sector revenue to $18 billion by 2016, up from $13.3 billion in 2011.Business in Vancouver recently spoke with Bond about her new post. cabinet Cabinet Q&AQ: The premier has instructed you to find and close gaps in educational opportunities in B.C. What gaps does she mean?A: We want to align the needs of industry and the various sectors in the jobs plan with training that's being provided. We want to train the right people for the jobs of the future in the right places. We need to train people closer to home. We know that we need to have training opportunities right across the province.Q: Do you mean there are geographic gaps where people are not able to get appropriate training?A: I'm not suggesting there's a gap. What we need to do is enhance and look at the progress we've already made. For the first time in B.C. history we're training doctors in northern B.C. We have now moved on to add other core health-care professionals, like physiotherapists and lab technicians.Q: Critics have said the new Destination BC is not as industry-led as the former Tourism BC. What will you do to ensure that it's industry-led?A: It's clear that Destination BC is a Crown corporation. I fully expect and want it very much to be industry-led. That was one of the reasons we moved to a new model that will allow for industry involvement. Destination BC will have a tourism marketing committee, which will fall under Destination BC's purview. The representatives on that committee will be chosen by the six tourism regions in the province. That's critical to me.Q: Will you lobby federal counterparts to craft Canadian air agreements with other countries to allow more airlines to come to Vancouver?A: We will continue to press with the aerospace and airline strategy that we have in place. Yes, there will continue to be an emphasis on allowing aircraft to land in B.C. That's a very critical piece of the strategy. I worked on it when I was minister of transportation. We've made a commitment to look at new international direct flights to B.C. with a goal of three more by 2014.Q: The number of campsites in the province is dwindling as land values rise. What will you do to encourage more campsites?A: It's always a balance. I live in northern B.C. so I have a personal understanding of the value of camping and fishing and hunting and all of those things that many British Columbians and others who visit our province value. Land use decisions are never easy. I'm a strong advocate for using the land base in as many ways as possible.Q: Could there be any incentives to encourage private campgrounds?A: No. We're not in the business of subsidizing. We're a government that's been very clear about that.Q: What government spending might happen in the area of tourism?A: One of the commitments we have is to upgrade rest stops and visitors centres in the province. That's key for people who are travelling in B.C. •Tags: Gordon Campbell,discount moncler jackets, Shirley Bond,moncler down jackets,moncler sale,discount moncler jackets, travel, fishing, tourism,moncler outlet, transport
