KARACHI: World champion and seventh seed Mohammad Asif, alongwith the unseeded duo of Khurram Hussain Agha and Aamir Tariq, reached the quarter-finals of the Jubilee Insurance 3rd Ranking Snooker Championship 2013 by registering their fourth successive wins here at the Karachi Sheraton Hotel on Sunday. The other seven seeds, Imran Shahzad, Asjad Iqbal, Hamza Akbar, Shahid Aftab, Mohammad Sajjad, Abdul Sattar and Abu Saim also stayed alive in the competition going into the final of league matches on Monday (today). They need to win their last games to force their way into the knockout phase of the seven-day event. As on the first couple of days, there were quite a few close contests and unexpected results on the penultimate day of league matches. Among the seeded cueists, Hamza Akbar, Mohammad Sajjad and Abu Saim crashed to defeats. The failure of Sohail Shahzad was equally surprising. The return to form of the vastly experienced Khurram Agha, who has remained unbeaten in the first four games, has made life difficult for both the seeded cueists in the Group A, Imran Shahzad and Abu Saim, who will clash today in what has become a do-or-die encounter for both of them. Defending champion and second seed Asjad Iqbal, having suffered defeats in his first couple of outings in the tourney, will need to overpower the unbeaten Mohammad Asif in order to have any chance of reaching the quarter-finals. The qualification of Aamir Tariq from the Group C means testing times for third seed Hamza Akbar and sixth seed Abdul Sattar, who will be pitted against each other today in yet another do-or-die battle. There is a three-horse race in the Group D with fourth seed Shahid Aftab and fifth Mohammad Sajjad facing stiff challenge from the unseeded Farhan Noor. One of the seeded cueists will be eliminated if Farhan manages to beat Mohsin Amin in his last league fixture. The league matches will come to an end on Monday (today) at the end of which reseeding will be done for the knockout games starting with the quarter-finals on Tuesday (tomorrow). Both semi-finals will take place on Wednesday and the final on Thursday. The tournament is also serving as a qualifier for the World Snooker Championship as far as Pakistan’s representation is concerned. With Mohammad Asif having been granted direct entry by virtue of being the defending champion, there’s a close fight between Imran Shahzad, Asjad Iqbal, Hamza Akbar, Shahid Aftab and Mohammad Sajjad for the two slots up for grabs.
