{B.C. leaders trade jabs but fail to score major blows}
Christy Clark, Adrian Dix|Dix only: Richard LamBy Bob MackinTue Apr 30, 2013 10:00am PSTPremier Christy Clark continued to paint NDP leader Adrian Dix as a tax-and-spend flip-flopper,moncler sale, but failed to score a major blow against the provincial election's perceived frontrunner during Monday night's 90-minute televised leaders' debate. The second and last debate in four days featured no grand revelations from any of the leaders. Clark attempted to simplify her fiscal responsibility message even further, but faced harsh criticism on economic issues and credibility from Dix and Conservative leader John Cummins."Here's how I characterize this: the NDP plan would rob Peter to pay Paul, hoping that Paul will vote for the NDP,moncler outlet,discount moncler jackets," Clark said. "My plan is to put both Peter and Paul to work so that they can realize the great opportunities of this province and they won't have to wait for government to be there to give them a hand. They can do it because they want to get out there and build B.C. with all the rest of us."While Clark claimed 32,200 net jobs were created since the September 2011 launch of her B.C. Jobs Plan,moncler on sale, Dix noted that 34,800 private-sector jobs were actually lost during the period."Neither Peter nor Paul are working," Dix said."Wasn't the Jobs Plan supposed to be the centrepiece of your government?" Dix said, noting the $16 million-plus, pre-election phase of the ad campaign. "Premier Clark, the facts are clear. I know they're not your facts, they're 'the' facts. Those facts, you can look them up on the Internet."Clark was the most polished, owing to her 2007 to 2010 career as a radio talkshow host on CKNW. Her CKNW predecessor, Jennifer Burke of CTV News Network, was the moderator. Dix had a shaky start but settled in, while Cummins's strong start faded."You're the only one in B.C. that believes that you balanced the budget," Cummins told Clark. "You had to sell of valuable government assets to do that. It's like selling off one room of your house to pay the mortgage. Sooner or later you're going to run out of rooms."Green Party leader Jane Sterk called Clark's balanced budget claims a "fantasy." She said: "LNG is a pipedream, B.C. is way too late in that game."Clark put Dix on the defensive over his Earth Day-announced opposition to the Kinder Morgan pipeline proposal. Dix said he generally supports liquefied natural gas, mining and forestry development in B.C."I still haven't heard an answer from you on my question about why there is no consistency in your party's position on this. It's something that does matter to British Columbians," Clark said. "You sound like a man who has no trouble saying yes to new spending, but you have lots of trouble saying yes to new economic development for our province."Dix replied, "That's simply not true, Premier Clark, and you look at your position on Enbridge Northern Gateway, which basically is if the price is right we'll sell out B.C.'s interests. I don't agree with a ninefold increase in tanker traffic off our coast."Three of the four leaders faced questions about integrity. Clark apologized for driving through a red light, as chronicled in an April 25 Vancouver Sun profile, but claimed she treated the intersection as if it was a four-way stop. Cummins defended the Conservatives' candidate-vetting process,moncler sale, despite firing four candidates. Dix said he has recovered from the backdated memo scandal in 1999 that caused his firing as Premier Glen Clark's chief of staff. He later became executive director of the non-profit Canadian Parents for French B.C. and Yukon division, then a twice-elected NDP MLA."I was 35 years old,moncler on sale, made a serious mistake,discount moncler jackets, and I own the mistake,moncler down jackets," Dix said. "One of the problems we've had in recent years is no one takes responsibility for anything. I'm responsible."Monday's debate marked the halfway point of the official campaign period. May 14 is voting day. Advance polls open May 8-11, but absentee voting is available now via Elections BC district offices.BMackin@biv.com@bobmackinTags: economy, Adrian Dix,moncler down jackets, Christy Clark, Glen Clark, John Cummins, provincial elections, Vancouver, British Columbia, natural gas, mining,moncler outlet, provincial government, B.C. budget 2013 _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
