{Link between LNG and forest carbon offset program raises environmental concerns}
Revolutionary Films was the first participant in the forest carbon program,discount moncler jackets, paying to plant 10,000 trees near Quesnel|Carbon Offset Aggregation CooperativeBy Jen St. DenisTue Jul 23, 2013 12:01am PSTGreenhouse gas-emitting LNG projects in B.C. could drive demand for the B.C. government's new forest carbon offset program,moncler down jackets, according to one of the program's creators."If LNG development goes ahead in B.C. and those corporations want to demonstrate some climate action and some corporate responsibility … then this could be a very good opportunity to do that," said James Sandland, manager of climate solutions with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.The Ministry of Forests announced the B.C. Forest Carbon Partnership Program at the end of June. Under the program, investors pay to plant trees and can then either sell or donate the offsets. The offsets are expected to be worth between $10 and $20 a tonne, double the price of an average carbon credit elsewhere in the world. It will cost about $4 a tree to do the replanting. The program is aimed at private companies. But the Pacific Carbon Trust, a Crown corporation that buys offsets on behalf of B.C.'s public institutions,moncler sale, is also a likely customer, according to Offsetters CEO James Tansey (see "Contentious forest carbon program could cost taxpayers, critics charge" – BIV issue 1238; July 16-22).But critics say LNG producers buying the offsets won't help improve B.C.'s carbon emissions performance."The worry is that this is going to be used solely as a ways and means of trying to plow forward maximally with LNG exporting and fugitive emissions, and try to get industry to offset – at a very high price to do so – replanting trees," Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver told Business in Vancouver.The forest carbon program was developed as a way of dealing with the mountain pine beetle's devastation of B.C. forests over the past decade. The environmental disaster turned the province's forests from a carbon sequestration sink to a carbon emitter,moncler on sale, according to a forests ministry document.If LNG projects are added to the mix,moncler on sale,moncler outlet, B.C. will be even farther behind in turning that equation around, said Weaver."In the big picture,moncler outlet,discount moncler jackets, it's not going to affect overall the amount of carbon we've put into the atmosphere."The environmental math also does not add up for Ben Parfitt, resource policy analyst for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. Parfitt said the amount of forest required to truly offset the emissions from one LNG facility would not be realistic.Extending the carbon tax to cover natural gas emissions would go further to boost incentives for companies to reduce emissions,moncler sale, said Weaver.Parfitt called for the government to create an open database that tracks forest loss from fire, logging and pests, the emissions from that loss and how much carbon is sequestered from conservation or replanting efforts."We don't have that data. So I don't know how you get to a point where you can start to market these credits in any kind of fashion that's defensible."Tags: disaster, conservation, James Tansey,moncler down jackets, Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, forests, Pacific Carbon Trust, natural gas _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
