Dear Editor,As a Sint Maarten citizen, I sometimes worry about if there is or not, an immigration policy. Reason I am saying this is that as we read everyday about robberies etc, and I come to the conclusion that maybe it is high time to close the gate. Closing the gate. This does not mean to stop people from coming to live on the island, but actually to control who is here and most of all, to make sure there are sufficient jobs for them. It is confusing at times to leave people come in to live and know that some of them will be starting a family and also know that if you leave them in, you should have schools and eventually work for them.Maybe, if we close the gate for the lack of words, we should leave people in if people leave, permanent residents, that is. Same amount in, same amount out if there is a reason to come. Don't sell our island too cheap. The way we let people in, it looks like we actually need more people. Look around and figure it out! Young people out of school have no jobs, because there are no jobs, and as such, we should try our best to help find work for them, one way or the other. Let people come in with added value in the form of diploma's etc. Find a way to find out who is here and who does not have a job. I know this is not easy to do, financially etc., but I am hoping that someone is trying to figure this out. Minister of Justice maybe?Having said that brings me to the following. When are we going to really zone our areas, in particular, bars and restaurant areas? I brought this up when I was president of the Chamber, that I thought it would be best to start zoning Simpson Bay area, the bar/restaurant area. So many years back. Imagine if this had been done, and for the sake of discussion, use a figure like say, 50 in this area. In the first place this would have given those that are already there an added value to their bars/restaurants. You actually do not stop people from wanting to start up such a business, but if that area is full, then you (government) can say: Well, there is an opening in this or that area etc., etc. This way, those who are there already can build up their business as much as they can,[url=http://www.michael-korshandbags-outlet.net]Michael Kors Handbags[/url], knowing that who is there is what is there and you try to survive accordingly.It is not easy to have a business running for many years, employees building a nice income based on the years they have been there and out of the blue, another business opens next to you starting up with minimum wage to compete with. Not good for the employees if they have to go home, because the business cannot survive anymore. A little income for government and a job for some meter maids. In fact, why not make a nice bus stop on Cannegieter Road, so everyone who needs a bus could walk there and take the bus. This way, they won't have to slow traffic to a stop on Back Street and save gas at that same time. Imagine, I see people coming out of the stores and walking directly into some busses; what a unique island we have. A little walk to the bus can actually be healthy.By the way, many of you call me and say, "Yeah, what you wrote was good or has some merit to it. Again I will say, these are just ideas, but ideas that together with government we should consider or work on.
