{Gym class gets an active makeover}
In the past, gym class was the setting for comedy,Toms Shoes Sale, tragedy and everything between.It was a place where applause echoed for the athletic and where there was nowhere to hide for those who couldn't climb the rope or clear the hurdles.That,Toms Shoes Outlet, however, isn't the case anymore, says Cathy Faber, superintendent and chief information officer with the Calgary Board of Education."Our focus isn't on athletic ability but is on physical awareness and well-being, collaboration and team dynamics,Cheap Toms," says Faber. "In K to nine,Cheap Toms, the emphasis is on daily physical activity and its benefits,Toms Shoes Sale, while in high school,Toms Shoes Outlet, there are all kinds of program extensions including wilderness programs or a variety of athletic activities."The physical education program in the Calgary Catholic School District emphasizes active living and focuses on physical activity that can be integrated into daily life focusing on skill acquisition, the appreciation of health benefits that result from physical activity, the development of co-operation skills and the decision to lead an active life."As a parent, gym class in school is extremely important to me," says Kelly Raffan, the mother of two daughters, Hannah and Ava, ages six and 13 who attend schools in the CCSD. "It keeps my girls active during the day. Gym class teaches sportsmanship in team sports with their peers. Gym class in junior high has given Hannah a chance to try sports she might not have tried otherwise. "She has also tried out for numerous after school sports teams through her school because of being introduced to sports such as badminton, volleyball, basketball and track and field.Both girls enjoy swimming, riding their bikes and jumping on the trampoline, and both have also participated in a variety of organized sports including lessons for swimming, soccer, gymnastics, dance, and junior life-saving.As a parent she says a successful physical education class is one in which learning and positive reinforcement is a priority.She says she wants her kids in a class where all students are involved regardless of skill level and where inclusion is a key value."I feel the priority of school physical education classes should be encouraging participation, learning new sports and skills that a child may not have the chance to try otherwise, building confidence and learning teamwork and good sportsmanship," says Kelly."With childhood obesity on the rise, I feel it is extremely important to keep our kids fit and excited about physical activity in a fun and safe environment within their schools." _________________ People watching the forthcoming beginning of the German half of the inhabitants of Berlin are no interested in co-optation |
