KUCHING: Kuching City South Council (MBKS) held its first-ever Mid-Autumn Festival street parade this week, with a focus on kindergarten children. Held within the council’s grounds, the parade included children of all races, who wore the traditional clothing of Sarawak’s diverse ethnicity and marched with store-bought lanterns and also self-made ones. “The Mid-Autumn Festival is about unity. MBKS mayor Datuk James Chan said unity was especially important in a small city like Kuching, which has a population of about 700,000. “Community harmony and bonding are important pillars to ensure Kuching remains a socially cohesive city. As a small city, these are vital factors for our continued success on the economic front,” Chan said, adding that the council would continue to engage the public via culture, youth and sports activities. The MBKS-organised Mid-Autumn Festival was one of the largest government initiated events this year. Aside from the children’s parade, it also included a lantern making contest. A participant Chai Chok Kha said he spent two weeks hand-crafting his winning entry, adding that it took him months of preparation. “It took me some months before that trying to come up with the best design, and two weeks to make it. It’s a personal interest. The process is a lot of fun even if it is tedious.” He won in the individual crafter category. The competition, which attracted more than 60 entries, was divided into children and adult categories. Among the invited guests at the community event were the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia, His Excellency Djoko Harjanto and Temenggong Lu Kim Yong.
