{Surrey's B.C. business hub aspirations gaining traction}
Artist's rendering of Coast Capital Savings new head office, which is scheduled to be built next to the King George SkyTrain stationTue Sep 17, 2013 12:01am PSTSurrey's vision of becoming a modern business centre and economic hub is slowly taking shape as more companies set up shop in the city, lured by lower taxes, reasonable lease rates, access to land and a growing workforce on its doorstep.New business licences are being issued at a rate of more than 200 a month,mcm handbags, but it’s not just the mom-and-pop operations that are mushrooming in B.C.’s fastest-growing city. Companies with a national and global footprint have begun to set up head offices in Surrey. Now others are looking to do the same.B.C.’s second largest credit union, Coast Capital Savings, recently unveiled plans for its new head office to be built next to the King George SkyTrain station.It had signed a contract with PCI Developments Corp. for the construction and leasing of about 70% of the approximately 180,000-square-foot, nine-storey property, with a targeted late-2015 completion date.Tracy Redies, Coast Capital Savings’ president and CEO, said the new headquarters would be the antithesis of a traditional corporate head office. The iconic building will display a state-of-the-art, open-concept design aimed at fostering collaborative work and innovation. It will include a daycare, with preferential enrolment for children of staff; a rooftop lunchroom and deck; a fitness facility and corporate university.“As far as Surrey is concerned it is the city of the future, of the Lower Mainland,” said OK Tire Stores Inc. CEO Greg Sims, who moved his company to a Campbell Heights industrial park in 2009 after it outgrew its premises in Langley. “It’s worked out extremely well for us.”OK Tire, which has about 55 staff in Surrey and 10 distribution centres across the country as well as 293 independently owned and operated stores, occupies 100,000 square feet of warehouse space and 20,000 square feet of office space.“And we have land to extend the building by another 40,000 [square feet] of warehouse when and if we need it,” said Sims,mcm bags, adding that he was amazed by the pace of development.And as Surrey grows, so do the fortunes of gas utility FortisBC, which moved its offices from downturn Vancouver in 2000 to a 230,000-square-foot, three-building complex in Surrey, where its 730 employees are based.“At that time, what we saw was that’s where our business was growing so it made sense to relocate here,” said Amy Hennessy, the utility’s community and aboriginal relations manager. “And today, business is still growing in Surrey.”Anita Huberman, CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade, likens Surrey to the Vancouver of 60 years ago.“We’re building a city right from the ground up,” Huberman said. “And I think people are excited by the new brand of Surrey.”Huberman said she’d been fielding calls from companies in India and the Middle East who are scouting global locations with a view to setting up large-scale manufacturing bases and who have Surrey in their crosshairs.But she said these are markets used to “free trade zones” where land is provided at a low cost or even free to bring in international conglomerates that will give jobs to local citizens and add to the economy.“I think that whole free trade zone concept that is so common on that side of the world, it’s not common in Canada,” Huberman said, “but I think that’s an opportunity that needs to be explored.”•Tags: economy, Anita Huberman, Tracy Redies, employee, India, Surrey, Langley, Surrey Board of Trade, Lower Mainland, Middle East, aboriginal
