Alan Franey: found numerous new venues for his 32-year-old film festival|© Dominic SchaeferBy Glen KorstromTue Sep 17, 2013 12:01am PSTCinema closures have forced the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) to downsize and change venues but the survival of the 32nd annual event, which kicks off on September 26, is a testament to organizers' entrepreneurial attitude and willingness to invest in new partnerships.Organizers hinted at the potential demise of the festival last October, when Empire Theatres announced that its Granville 7 would close the following month. Cressey Development Group had already planned to tear down the 63-year-old Ridge Theatre on Arbutus Street – a longtime VIFF venue. When Westside Church bought the Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts in May,mcm handbags, more doubt was cast on how big VIFF could be this year. But with the number of films down 13% to 341, screenings down 11% to 567 and an expected 15% drop in attendance to 120,000, observers say that the festival is showing remarkable resilience."It will be a little harder for filmgoers to travel to some of the new venues, but there are a lot of theatres involved this year that haven't [been] in the past so it looks like it will be a strong festival," said Leonard Schein, who co-founded VIFF in 1982.Schein owned the Ridge, Fifth Avenue Cinemas and the Park Cinema for decades until he retired earlier this year and sold them to Cineplex Inc. (TSX:CGX).The most innovative of VIFF's new partnerships is with Simon Fraser University (SFU).The university is giving VIFF discounted rental rates at its Goldcorp Centre for the Arts in the Woodward's Building, where VIFF will hold dozens of screenings throughout its 16-day run.In exchange for discounted rental rates, VIFF has agreed to hold six "special" screenings, which are mostly meant for students, at SFU's Burnaby and Surrey campuses.VIFF will also provide filmmakers to give talks in classrooms, said Michael Boucher, who is SFU's director of cultural programs.VIFF executives such as festival director Alan Franey will also take part in a mentoring program with students."There's a real sense of creative entrepreneurialism at this year's festival and a willingness to be a partner," Boucher told Business in Vancouver.Part of SFU's mandate in the Woodward's Building is to help revitalize its neighbourhood. That's in part why Boucher partnered with the Hastings Crossing Business Improvement Association to give VIFF attendees 10% discounts on food at 10 different area restaurants.Other new VIFF venues include the little-used, city-owned Vancouver Playhouse Theatre, which has never hosted movies.VIFF invested thousands of dollars on a movie screen that it will leave behind for other arts groups to use in the future.Franey said other equipment used in the Playhouse will be borrowed from sponsors. The biggest new venue will be Cineplex's International Village, where VIFF will use three of the venue's 12 screens for 10 days."Cineplex was only interested in us being there for what they consider a normal period of time for a film festival," Franey said. "We're longer than a regular-length film festival."Independent cinema owners, such as Rio Theatre's Corinne Lea, were more welcoming."We're excited to get VIFF for the entire run," Lea told Business in Vancouver. "They will bring new faces to our theatre, and they have agreed to make all the screenings for those 19 years of age and older. That means we can sell alcohol at our concession."Other VIFF screens include its own Vancity Theatre on Seymour Street, the non-profit Cinemateque on Howe Street and the Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts, where new owners were hesitant but eventually agreed to allow the festival to return.Tags: Alan Franey, Leonard Schein, Vancouver, Simon Fraser University, film, entrepreneur
