{U of O prof lucky to be alive after plane crash}
OTTAWA — An Ottawa pilot says he is “very lucky” after he and his grandson walked away from a plane crash without a scratch Saturday morning.Michael Miles, 64,peuterey prezzi, was planning to take his 12-year-old grandson, Wesley, for a day of fishing on Pike Lake,peuterey outlet, near Fort Coulonge in the Pontiac. They went to get the plane, a five-seat Maule Rocket M7 on floats, from a float-plane base near Farm Point on the Gatineau River.There was fog on the river, so they sat in the plane for about 20 minutes waiting for it to clear. At about 9:30 a.m., they made an attempt.“There was some clearing on the near side of the river,” Miles said. “So I started up the plane and taxied down the river so that I could take off up the strip where it was clearing off.”As they moved along the water building up speed to try to get airborne, the plane began pulling to the right.“When you power on a plane, there’s a tendency of the plane to —because of the prop spin — to turn to the right. Unfortunately, the thicker fog was over on the right. So ... the plane sort of got pulled into the thicker fog.”Miles tried unsuccessfully to counteract that. Then he eased up on the power, deciding not to try to get up into the air yet — but by that time it was too late.The plane had already reached the other shore of the river and hit a tree, severing part of a wing.“The force of that spun the plane around and just put me up against the shore,” Miles said.He is very thankful that he and his grandson were not hurt in the crash.Although flying has been a hobby for the last 14 years, Miles spends his days as a professor and the director of the MBA program at the University of Ottawa’s Telfer School of Management.He said it’s not impossible that the story will one day be told during a lecture.“Risk management would probably be one of the areas this would fit into,” he said.But the mishap won’t change his own risk-benefit analysis on flying.“Not at all. The plane’s insured, so I’ll get it fixed and it will probably take a couple of months to do that. Once I get it fixed, I’m back on the road — or in the sky, as case may be.”zsinger@ottawacitizen.comtwitter.com/zev_singer
