{Opposition parties preparing for provincial election call}
Rumours are getting stronger ...Will she roll the dice or won’t she?As MNAs packed up Thursday to spend next week in their home ridings — the National Assembly is not sitting — rumours of a December election continued to swirl.Indeed, they are so strong now, the question is whether Premier Pauline Marois can actually stop the election machine from shifting from a high idle into gear.The pundits seem ready in any case.“Advantage PQ,” TVA political commentator Jean Lapierre tweeted this week in presenting fresh political factors pointing to why Marois might be planning a vote for fear of missing out on what seems to be a decent window of opportunity.Monday’s announcement of a $2-billion job creation plan — Priorité emploi — by Marois and a host of Parti Québécois cabinet ministers was the final straw for the opposition parties, which now are all assuming the election is coming and making preparations.The scenario being punted around has the government calling the vote three days after the Nov. 3 municipal election, on Nov. 6, which would see Quebecers go to polls Dec. 9.The Coalition Avenir Québec is so convinced, it is putting off its Nov. 15-17 policy convention rather then risk having to pay cancellation fees for hotels and convention rooms.Further fuelling the mill was a report — confirmed to The Gazette by senior government officials Thursday — of a special meeting of PQ MNAs and ministers Friday Oct. 25.The meeting has taken on a mysterious aura.Officially, it is to update the caucus on the status of various issues, but there is speculation the meeting will turn into an election “reality check,” for Marois.By the time the meeting comes around,[url=http://www.saclancelvente.fr]sac lancel[/url], the government will have seen fresh polling data on how Quebecers have responded to the month-long parade of election-style moves.That includes Monday’s massive job creation plan, the charter of values and the promise to extend the blue line of Montreal’s métro. On Thursday, there was a $1-billion industrial development plan.The government has made more than 200 investment and subsidy announcements since the start of September.Quashing the rumours has become a problem, with Marois insisting this week that the job creation plan has been in the works for months.“It would be unfair to say we prepared this plan on a corner of the kitchen table because we wanted to go into an election,” Marois said Monday in Montreal.On the other hand, PQ MNAs have been told not to stray from Quebec during their Thanksgiving week break. That’s because they may need to pose for campaign photo shoots.So what do public opinion polls say? The last few have placed the Liberals ahead of the PQ, with the CAQ trailing third.But given the even distribution of the critical francophone vote among the three parties, nobody has been sure whether a vote today would produce a Liberal or PQ minority government.More polls are coming, but the Liberal lead over the PQ has been shrinking while the CAQ vote is so stagnant the PQ no long fears the party that took so many of its seats in 2012.
